Searching for famous I1 individuals

Robert "Fighting Bob" La Follete, a U.S. Senator who was one of the most prominent American politicians of the early 20th century and a candidate for President with the Progressive Party in 1924 belonged to haplogroup I1. He was descended from Jean La Follette, who lived from approx 1720 to 1763 or 1775 (different sources give different dates) originally from Anjou, France who settled in New Jersey in the middle 1700s. One descendant of Jean is shown on the Lafollette DNA Project at FTDNA, along with a descendent of Georges La Follette, who seems to have been a son or grandson of Jean

Robert La Follette was the most famous descendant of the family, but there is a Wikipedia article on the La Follette family which shows multiple descendants prominent enough to be the subject of their own Wikipedia articles.

American Professor of Physics and Meteorology. Superintendent of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1889-1894). The Mendenhall glacier, river and valley in Alaska were named after him. Issued the ‘Mendenhall Order’ for the transition of the United States' weights and measures from the ‘English’ system to the international metric one. President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1889). President of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1894-1901). His ten-times great-grandfather is Thomas Myldenale, born about 1460 in England. This Thomas is the most recent paternal-line common ancestor of Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, my fourteenth cousin and myself. I and my distant cousin both belong to I-DF29 > I-BY183623 > I-BY182841 with a TMRCA of about 500 years before present. As both Thomas’s also share our Y-DNA, Thomas Corwin Mendenhall is therefore an I1 individual. The Mendenhall surname duly appears on the FTDNA website when searching I-DF29 by surname. [Hopefully, it will be moved down to the newly introduced subclades soon].
 
According to I-Z382 FTDNA project, Roosevelt family, which includes 26th and 32th presidents of United States, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt belongs to the I1 haplogroup, more specifically to the Z58>Z382>BY213758 branch. Tested Roosevelt's kit number is 705401.

Stephen Crane, a 19th century American writer who wrote The Red Badge of Courage, belonged to haplogroup I1. He was descended from Jasper Crane (approx 1602-1680), who was one of the founders of Newark, New Jersey. Several descendants of Jasper are listed as I-M253 at the Crain/Crane DNA Project at FTDA.

I previously posted this on the thread "Y-DNA haplogroups of the Founding Fathers of the United States" in reference to the writer's great-great-grandfather, also named Stephen Crane. who served in the First Continental Congress.
 
New paper in Current Biology by Begg et al 2023 entitled Genomic Analysis of hair from Ludwig van Beethoven"

The paper finds that Beethoven was Y DNA I1a-Z139 Haplogroup. In terms of admixture, > 99% European and clusters with modern Germans[FONT=ElsevierGulliver, Georgia, Times New Roman, STIXGeneral, Cambria Math, Arial, Helvetica, Lucida Sans Unicode, Microsoft Sans Serif, Segoe UI Symbol, Arial Unicode MS, serif]. It's indeed an interesting read, but the findings are what anyone would expect. With that being said, we have to take these results with a bit of a grain of salt since it's not absolutely certain that the locks belong to Beethoven, but the authors are confident that they're authentic. Besides, the famous Hiller Lock attributed to Beethoven was not Beethoven’s. It was from an Ashkenazi Jewish woman.

Of the non-matching hair samples tested, our sequence data show that the highly publicized Hiller Lock originated from a woman with close autosomal affinity in PCA space to present day North African, Middle Eastern, and Jewish populations". Its mitochondrial haplogroup, K1a1b1a (Table S2), is highly prevalent among Ashkenazi Jews.

American poet Ezra Pound, famous both for his poetry and his collaboration with the Italian Fascist government during WWII, belonged to haplogroup I1. He was descended from John Pound, an early settler of Piscataway, New Jersey, and his father Thomas Pound, who was born in London and died either in New England or Long Island, New York. 2 descendants of this family have been tested and are in Group A at the Pound-Pounds DNA Project at FTDNA.
