BBC News : Spain urged to stem migrant flow

Lawmakers in Spain's Canary Islands have urged the central government in Madrid to do more to stem what they say is an "avalanche" of illegal migrants.

Some 7,000 migrants, mostly from Africa, have reached the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean this year alone.

Madrid wants African nations to take back illegal migrants already in Spain.

Last week, Spain launched a three-year diplomatic offensive to try to persuade six nations in West Africa to bring the crisis under control.

In May alone, about 2,000 would-be migrants reached the Canary Islands, mostly from Central and Sub-Saharan Africa.

And we are in still in May, so more may be coming...

It's funny how such desperate emigration did not happen when Africa was still colonised by Europe. It's only since the independence of those countries that people have tried so hard to come to Europe. And this isn't getting better with time. Interestingly, overseas territories which have remained under French or British sovereignty (Guyana, Guadeloupe, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, New Caledonia...) do not have a large number of emigrants, eventhough they could legally come to Europe. I wonder if it would not have been better to keep at least one country on continental Africa administrated by a European nation as an example, and have immigrants flow to that country instead of distant Europe, in a journey that uses up most of the emigrant's spendings and sometimes cost their lives.

Unfortunately, it is too late for a post-colonial state in Africa. The US could invade a country already in chaos, then let it be administrated by the UN to build a stable democracy with a stronger economy, where Africans longing for freedom and peace could emigrate to. In other words, a sort of USA for Africans in Africa.
