Songs in Italian

An oldie I still like to listen to - Montagne verdi (Green Mountains)

An oldie I still like to listen to - Montagne verdi (Green Mountains)

That is definitely an oldie but a goodie. I always think of my dad's mountains when I hear that song. :)

Can you believe the hair, though? Oy Vey! It's always a shock looking at the fashion and hair styles of past decades.

I was having a discussion about jealousy on a thread recently and started thinking about songs about it. Spoilt for choice in the realm of Italian music!

Vasco Rossi:
It's not jealousy
What I feel
What I feel inside
It's a sickness
That I don't understand.
Just tell me a lie
It doesn't matter
As long as you're mine
What importance does it have
The rest is madness
The rest is fantasy
The rest is my fault
My fault and that's it
Don't go away
Stay near me
Stay very close to me
Don't go away
Not even with your eyes
When you're sitting next to me
Because jealousy
is just this
Because jealousy is nothing
Nothing but my fault

Repeat

It's not a pretty song, but it's almost hypnotic

Adriano Celantano:
Tango della Gelosia
Jealousy,
say again that you love me
in my heart i feel
a presentiment
hold me tight,
forgive me please
for this moment
you don't have to forget it

what kind of woman are you
what do you want
what do you want from me
where will you go
when you're not with me what will you do
what kind of woman are you
you never smile
you'll enjoy being with me

love means jealousy
nobody knows that better than i do
I won't sleep at night thinking about you
By day I'll be sad that you'll cry

love means jealousy
for the one who falls in love with you
remain with me, cm'on don't say no
why are you doing this, not saying yes to me
hold me tight
please kiss me cm'on
this is the moment
that you mustn't forget

what kind of woman are you
what do you want
what do you want from me
where will you go
what will you do when I'm not with you
what kind of woman are you
you never smile
you'll enjoy being with me

love means jealousy
nobody knows that better than i do
tomorrow i'll leave on the bus
and i swear i won't come back

if love means jealousy
then i'm crazy for you
it's better this way than suffering more and more
i know that
you'll regret,it, you'll look for me

I believe you are referring to the era of permed hair :). Everyone was doing it. It was massive. Believe it or not I had my hair permed when I was 18. The hairdresser said your hair is already wavy why do you want to perm it? I said I want real curls. Oh well...the reason? I liked Brian May (from Queen) guitar playing.

I will NEVER show the photos from that time these days to anyone.........and never forget that horrible acid like liquid I had to inhale and endure. Those were the days when most ladies had rollers in their hair during the day. So funny. Nice memories tho.

I never thought about that, but its probably very true. Although John Lennons Jelous guy was one of my favourits songs, also the cover version by Brian Ferry :).

I like Vasco rossi very much....with Vita spericolta topping my list.

A modern Italian song and singer I like, and I don't like many nowadays. :)

Giovanni Caccamo-Non Siamo Soli-We Aren't Alone

"[h=2]We're Not Alone[/h]Let's go away, elsewhere
Out of here, I've lost my limitations
I'd smile tomorrow
Looking at the sky I recognize
Happiness

We're alone everyday
We're not alone
Hands in the bright night touch us
We're alone everyday
We're not alone
Glances will fly to the sky
With no tears

I'll wait, maybe
That from the border I'm taken to where you were
I'd erase adverse distances
These fears
If my pain had a meaning
I'd surprise myself

We're alone everyday
We're not alone
Hands in the bright night touch us

You can't hate
I don't know how to love
But I'd want to smile
Even if you're not here now
Let's throw away the pain around us
Tomorrow, as you return,
Another night will shine again

Hands in the bright night touch us."

"God, How Much I Love you"-Gigliola Cinquetti. The English subtitles appear on screen.

It came to mind because we were discussing how some people seem to be able to cheat time to some degree. She was still a teenager here...so impossibly young and innocent. It was before my time, but her records were played a lot at home.

"Dio, come ti amo":

I don't know if anyone posted this song yet, but this song along with Con Te from Andrea Bocelli are my absolute favourites

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV0Ks4cujNU

It's Erba di Casa Mia from Massimo Ranieri, I would listen to it all the time as a little kid, I even took my mom's cd and put in my car :)

Would like to post another song, this song was very popular this summer in Italy, it brings good memories of the trip, its one of the few songs that me and cousins can actually sing together.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKT_euhimTk

Its from J-AX & Fedez

We obviously listen to very different Italian radio stations. :) I like Massimo Ranieri, however. I've posted a lot of his work over on the Italian folksong and dialect thread.

As you say you're a dialect speaker you won't need my translations.

You might also like Gigi d'Alessio.

This is more on my wave length as far as current actual singers in Italian are concerned.

Yes I do :), Gigi is very good, for me this is my favourite song from him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWtL6nfV5HM

Yes very true I prefer classic Italian music and dialect music

The radio station in Montreal is on an AM channel and they always play the classics. Actually maybe you can help me, the last time I went to Italy 11 years ago there was a song that I really liked but could never find it again, the chorus contains "Stop! Domentica per che" I was 11 its hard to remember the rest of the lyrics.

You probably had trouble finding it because "domentica" is neither standard Italian nor dialect. Domenica would mean Sunday. Dimentica would mean forget. Perhaps you meant the Tiziano Ferro song "Stop...Dimentica". This is the English translation.

"One look that breaks the silence
One look has said what I think
One, one look
One look could last whole day
The departure without coming back
One, one look
Everything that I know, I will tell you
And everything that you don't know
to say, the sea explains
I feel something big
bigger than this town
The lie that breaks every silence
is the lie that I say only if I dont think
Please don't stop now
Because later you cant

Stop, forget about it
This silence
isn't worth a word
not even one, and therefore
Stop, Forget because
everything will go its way
forget because
forget for me

One great story as a world
one story long as a day
One, one story
One lie of only one word
is your most charming story
One, your story

Stop, forget about it
This silence
isn't worth a word
not even one, and therefore
Stop, Forget because
everything will go its way
forget because
forget for me

Stop, forget about it

not even one, and therefore
Stop, Forget because
everything will go its way
forget because

Everything that I know I will tell you
Everything that you don't know to say, the sea will explain
Please don't stop
Now, because later you cant

Stop, forget about it
This silence
isn't worth a word
not even one, and therefore
Stop, Forget because
everything will go its way
forget because
forget for me

Stop! forget
it isn't worth a word
not even one, and therefore
Stop! Forget because
everything will go its way
forget because
forget for me
stop! forget

Yes this is the song!!! Thank you very much, I appreciate it :) I really have to improve on my writing, I always have problems with the vowels, its an issue I even have with French.

Umberto Tozzi and Raf: People of the Sea

I was too lazy to translate it, but luckily someone else had already done it:

[h=2]People of The Sea-Gente di mare[/h]"We, people from the plains
Excellent drivers in the city
Are always a little scared of the sea
Because of the idea of too much freedom

And although we have the salt in our hair
We have the depth of the sea in our souls
And freezing women in their shawls
Waiting for something which nobody knows

People of the sea, who leave it behind
Going to where they like, they don’t know where
People dying of nostalgia
But when they go back after one day, they die
Of the desire to go away

(People of the sea)
And when we stop on the shore
(People who go)
Our look goes to the horizon
(People of the sea)
Bringing our thoughts adrift
Because of the idea of too much freedom

People of the sea, who leave it behind
Going to where they like, they don’t know where
Buccaneer people who are no more
Faraway people carrying in their hearts
This big blue brother
At the other side of the sea, there’s someone who
There’s someone who knows nothing about you

People of the sea, who leave it behind
Going to where they like, they don’t know where
We, prisoners of these cities
We always live for today and for yesterday
Nailed down by reality,
and the people of the sea go"

mmericano! mmericano
siente a me, chi t’ ho fa fa?
tu vuoi vivere alla moda
ma se bevi whisky and soda
po’ te sente ‘e disturbà.

Tu abballe ‘o roccorol
tu giochi al basebal ‘
ma ‘e solde pe’ Camel
chi te li dà? …
La borsetta di mammà!

Tu vuò fa l’ americano
mmericano! mmericano!
ma si nato in Italy!
siente a mme

come te vene ‘capa e di:”I love you!?”

Tu vuò fa l’ americano
mmericano! mmericano
siente a me, chi t’ho fa fa?
tu vuoi vivere alla moda…

The lovely Gigliola Cinquetti singing a song about the destruction of the environment.

The Black Rose

An evening rose
never turns black.

They've destroyed the swallow's nest,
they've thrown a stone even up there,
they've cut the wings of a butterfly
and the butterfly doesn't move anymore.

They are changing the world,
they are killing me.
But an evening rose
never turns black.

They've brought a man to the frontier
and from that day he hasn't been seen anymore.
They've thrown ink in the creek
and you can no longer see anything there.

They are changing the world,
they are killing me.
But an evening rose
never turns black

And everything goes, everything goes
until the earth will explode.

Comfort: Carmen Consoli and Tiziano Ferro.

"If this city isn't sleeping
Well then that makes two of us
Who are sleepless In order to prevent your escape
I locked the door and handed the key to you
Now I am sure of the difference
Between closeness and vicinity
It's in the way you move
In a sheltering tent in this desert of mine

Maybe it's because it's been raining since July
Or the world that explodes in tears
Maybe it's because you haven't gone out for months
You're tired or you've simply used up your smiles

To lift the heart with both hands, it takes courage
And blindfolded eyes on a sky that has turned its back on youu
Patience, our home, contact and your comfort
It's my business
It's something that has to do with me

If this city is confusing
Well then that makes two of you
Who can prevent my escape.

It shut my eyes and handed the key to you
Now I am sure of the difference
Between distance and separation

Maybe it's because it's been raining rain since July
Or the world that's been exploding in tears
Maybe it's because you haven't gone out for months
You're tired or you've simply used up your smiles

To lift the heart with both hands, it takes courage
And blindfolded eyes on a sky that has turned its back
Patience, our home, courage and your comfort
It's my business
It's something that has to do with me

Maybe it's the summer rain
Or God watching us from above
Maybe it's because you haven't gone out for months
You're tired or you've simply used up your breaths

To lift the heart with both hands, I need a vision
That comfort that has to do with you
That comfort that has to do with you
To lift the heart with both hands, it takes courage
And so much, so much love

The first swallow has already come back
It is starting to pirouette in the clear sky
The nice weather is arriving to announce itself

Open the windows to the new sun

Beautiful girls
In love
It may be the most beautiful dream that you dream
There will be happiness tomorrow

Among the silvery clouds in the sky
The moon has already made a date with someone
Open the windows to the new sun
It's springtime
The festival of love

La, la, la...

On the sill a small nightingale
With tender wings and fluffy feathers
Has already shyly taken off
And it has started to pick on the window pane
It wants to bring its most beautiful message

Open the windows, it's spring time. Inflammation, coughing, malaise, running nose, suffering, lymphatic swelling, feeling like crap...spring time..

Noemi and Fiorells Mannoia: L'amore si odia

"Come here, come here, because I have to tell youAll those things, things that you didn't want to hear, suffer, enjoy or finish
Come here, come here, always the same story
An unstable, unstable equilibrium that collapses in the wind of a new glory, love hates
Ah, if it was that easy, ah, if he was still in love with me
And you know every petal pretends to be a rose
For every drop I would like a flood over everything
But you do not deserve more than a beat of this life
For everything that matters if it matters you are like glue between my fingers
Come here, come here, I did love you
But talking about it again is useless, useless, it doesn't make sense to think about you, to understand, to try or to disappear
Come here, come here, the usual words
Of a fragile, fragile feeling, like asphalt consuming the sole, love hates
Ah, if it was all easy
Ah, if she was still in love with you
And you know every petal
Pretends to be a rose
For every drop I would like
A flood over everything
But you do not deserve more than a beat of this life
For everything that matters
If it matters
You are like glue between my fingers
And you know every petal pretends to be a rose
For every drop I would like a flood over everything
Everything
But you do not deserve more than a moment of my life
For everything that matters
If it matters, you are the imprints on my fingers"
