What music are you listening to?

I call this "music for the end of the world". It's Verdi's Requiem. It's a toss up for me whether I prefer Verdi's or Motzart's.

Anyway, here is a short selection, the "Dies Irae", or "Day of Wrath", performed with great passion and brilliance by the Moscow State Symphony under Claudio Vandelli.

This is the entire piece as beautifully directed by Maazel and sung by Pavarotti, among others.

This is an interesting fact about the Verdi Requiem...

"The Requiem was performed 16 times between 1943 and 1944 by prisoners in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (also known as Terezín) under the direction of Rafael Schächter. The performances were extraordinary on several counts: first, they had only a single vocal score with piano accompaniment, so every part had to be learned from memory; second, they practised in a dark, cold, damp basement with only a broken piano after long days of forced labour; and third, as the performances took place over an extended period, many of the singers were removed by the Nazis and had to be replaced. The final performance particularly provided a basis for dignified self-expression as well as attempting to symbolically communicate the circumstances at the camp to a visiting International Red Cross delegation in 1944."

Of course, nobody gave a damn.

It was written to commemorate the death of Manzoni.

There is a long long time to go for that Angela....millions of generations yet. They are both great. While Verdis seem to be a more complex work and maybe more melodramatic, I find Motzarts requim easier to listen to and more pleasant. Its just a matter of opinion really

It depends how soon he tires of us, or so I used to think. :)

As to the two pieces of music, which one I play depends on my mood. I play the Verdi when I'm angry about some new outrage, the moments when I literally would look forward to the Judge coming to throw the evil into the flames for all eternity. I find it cathartic. :)

"Death and Nature shall stand amazed,
when all Creation rises again
to answer to the Judge. Mezzo-soprano and Chorus:
A written book will be brought forth,
which contains everything
for which the world will be judged.
Therefore when the Judge takes His seat,
whatever is hidden will be revealed:
nothing shall remain unavenged.
The day of wrath, that day will
dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl prophesied...

Anyway, I love this Libera Me with Leontine Price and Von Karajan:

Soprano and Chorus: Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved: when you will come to judge the world by fire; I tremble, and I fear the judgment and the wrath to come, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved; The day of wrath, that day of calamity and misery; a great and bitter day, indeed.; Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them; Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day. Deliver me, O Lord, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved; when you will come to judge the world by fire; Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day. Deliver me.

I know this is abit of an extreme compared to these classics, but I find these oldies really change my mood. They work so well for me :). So innocent and sweet.

. So innocent and sweet.

Same for me, although I usually turn to groups like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, or the Beach Boys.

I recently saw "Jersey Boys" the movie. I also saw the stage show. The show is better, but they're both a lot of fun.
I have the original cast CD of the stage show. It's great. Can't find it on youtube, but these guys are pretty good.
The original guys are the best, of course:

It's time for some humor and some blondes! Country star Melissa Lambert and "This ain't my mama's broken heart!"

"Go and fix your make-up, run and hide your crazy, start acting like a lady, bite your lip and get a grip."

Words to live by. :)

Listen To Your Heart-Laura Pausini

I've loved her voice for years, and there are so many songs of hers that I like. This one is particularly nice. (For Spanish speakers, she almost always does a Spanish language version of her songs.)

Hey, how are you now?
Betrayed by a story that has ended
and in front of you the way out
you feel alone
there is no one to listen to you
who shares your problems with you
never! don't change!
stay as you are
follow your destiny
because all the pain that you have inside
can never cancel your path
and now you'll discover
that the story of our every minute
belongs only to us
but not if you still remain
lost without a reason
in a sea of 'why'

listen to your heart inside of you
and in the silence you'll find the words
close your eyes and then go away
try to come to the planet of your heart

it's difficult to know
the right thing to do
if emotion hits you in the head
the pride that takes you
the nights in which remorse wakes you up
for fear of making an error
but if you find yourself
without a star to follow
don't ever give up

Believe in yourself! Listen to your heart!
do what it says, even if it makes you suffer
close your eyes, and let yourself go
try to fly over this pain

You won't deceive yourself
if you listen to your heart
open your arms to touch
every hand, every hope, every dream that you want
because later it will take you to every heart

every time that you don't know what to do
try to fly, to the planet of the heart

you, you, try to fly
to the planet of your heart

Goodness, how I love Italian concerts. I can sing along to my heart's content because so is everyone else. :)

OK, it's time for another fun song from a blonde country star: Carrie Underwood

Maybe Next Time He'll Think Before He Cheats! :)

If any ladies are considering this, please don't! Jail time, even in women's prisons, is not fun.

Laura Pausini and Biagio Antonacci: Tra te e il mare-Between you and the sea

With so many modern singers their stage performances stink because they don't actually have good voices. That's never an issue with Laura. I don't know why she hasn't been able to crack the English language market. She's certainly done superlatively well with the Spanish language market, with 3 Latin Grammys, and huge sales and cult following all over Latin America.

Anyway, here's the English translation.

"I'm not afraid of you anymore
You’re all my life
I live on the breath you leave here
Which I consume while you’re away
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t stay quiet and wait any longer

Me, who would have lived with you
In your foreign looking city
Alone, with the instinct of someone who knows how to love
Alone, however always with you
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t feel tired of waiting any longer

No, no, darling
I don’t agree
Either you come back or you stay there
I don’t live anymore
I don’t dream anymore
I’m scared, help me
Darling, I don’t believe you anymore
Each time you leave
You swear to me it’ll be the last one
I prefer to say good bye to you

At night, I look in every star for a reflection of you
But all of this is not enough for me, I’m growing up now

No, no, darling
I don’t agree
Either you come back or you stay there
I don’t live anymore
I don’t dream anymore
I’m scared, help me
Darling, I don’t believe you anymore
Each time you leave
You swear to me it’ll be the last one
I prefer to say good bye to you

I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t stay quiet and wait anymore
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore"

Perhaps this is appropriate. I wasn't a big fan of Prince music but surely he had great talent. RIP Prince, passing away at 57 how sad.
