Genetic study Studying genetic and cultural admixture of Phoenicians in Sicily

It's interesting that the closest sample for the V13 in the paper is the Hvar sample

I34296 G14 HR_G14_a HV11 E1b1b1a1b1

Who happens to be E-V13 too.

Just to be clear, i took it from teepean post, and let chatgpt compile the statistics. ChatGpt looks like it is prone to quite some errors, i reiterated couple of times to fix itself. I am surprised there is not more E-M34 and J1, but instead we got J2a and E-V22.

thanks ;)
he is doing a great job
but he said himself that those individuals need to be checked manual
( so i hope pribislav will look at them to be sure )

Y-DNA according to snipsa. Just remember that the results can be completely wrong and need manual checking.

Very interesting, Kinfgdavid. It seems to confirm what was already guessed from previous studies. Phoenicians and Punics were not genetically the same. The Levantine Phoenicians' contribution to the Punics is minimal. Thus Phoenician culture spread to the central and western Mediterranean not through substantial migratory movements from Lebanon but through movements of a few individuals, probably movements much earlier than the 6th century BCE. The majority of Punic people turn out to be similar to the local populations of Sicily and the Aegean, and only a minority are of local North African ancestry, an ancestry that will probably grow over time with the growth of Carthage.

Punic people were genetically diverse with almost no Levantine ancestors

The maritime Phoenician civilization from the Levant transformed the entire Mediterranean during the first millennium BCE. However, the extent of human movement between the Levantine Phoenician homeland and Phoenician-Punic settlements in the central and western Mediterranean has been unclear in the absence of comprehensive ancient DNA studies. We generated genome-wide data for 210 individuals, including 196 from 14 sites traditionally identified as Phoenician and Punic in the Levant, North Africa, Iberia, Sicily, Sardinia, and Ibiza, and an early Iron Age individual from Algeria. Levantine Phoenicians made little genetic contribution to people living in Punic settlements in the central and western Mediterranean between the 6th and 2nd centuries BCE, despite abundant archaeological evidence of strong cultural, historical, linguistic, and religious links. Instead, these inheritors of Levantine Phoenician culture derived most of their ancestry from populations with a genetic profile similar to that of Sicily and the Aegean. Much of the remaining ancestry originated from North Africa, reflecting the growing influence of Carthage; however, this was a minority contributor of ancestry in all sampled sites, including in Carthage itself. Different Punic sites across the central and western Mediterranean show similar patterns of high genetic diversity. We also detect genetic relationships across the Mediterranean, reflecting shared demographic processes shaping populations around the Punic world.

Looking at the early results posted in the forums on Y-DNA, mtDNa, autosomal DNA the Levantine input seems greater than the abstract on ENA claims. All a bit confusing it seems.

Somewhat pointless because there is still no specific information on the exact dating and locations from which the samples came.

I12848 is likely the first South Thracian or Northern Greek - or Thraco-Greek mixed E-V13 from Italy in the ancient DNA record we got up to this point. Because the earlier Himera mercenaries were more North Thracian/Dacian/Central-Northern Balkan people.

It's interesting that the closest sample for the V13 in the paper is the Hvar sample

I34296 G14 HR_G14_a HV11 E1b1b1a1b1

Who happens to be E-V13 too.

Some of the Croatian islands had a Greek (or Thraco-Greek?) population:

The ancient Greeks founded the colony of Pharos in 384 BC on the site of today's Stari Grad, making it one of the oldest towns in Europe.

In 384 BC the Greek colonisers of Pharos defeated Iadasinoi warriors and their allies, invited by the Hvar indigenes in their resistance to the Greek colonization. The first coins which Pharos minted after the war depicted a goat standing opposed to a snake. The two animals symbolize the Pharian Greeks (goat) and the Illyrians (snake).

Subclade would be great to know, but probably its a rare South Thracian into Greek branch? Hopefully someone from the online experts and/or FTDNA/YFull take a look.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Sample I24672 Italy_Sicily_IA_oEurope looks more or less like an Iron Age Italic (specifically Latin)

The closest sample from the Moriopoulos G25 ancient selection appears to be the Iron Age Latin Palestrina Colombella sample who also shares his Y-dna subclade R1b-U152>Z56>Z145, coincidentally enough.

A descendant of Republican Roman colonists from around the time of the Punic Wars perhaps?

This is his distances, maybe something of a Thraco-Greek, South-Thracian or Macedonian/North-Greek, IDK, along those lines.

Until we have solid information on exact dating and uniparental markers, it is difficult to determine.

Is France_IA2_Celto-Ligurian a fabricated label? Or those five individuals are indeed named in this way by an academic paper?

a user crashdoc from genarchivist looked at the samples manual

Here is the semi-manual Y-calls. It is based on ftdna tree with snps and branches added from yfull. When ftdna's name is different it is in parentheses. When a ftdna group has more than 1 yfull equivalent (ie is split), they are comma separated. I erred on the safe side: confirmed males, mapping quality minimum 30, terminal hg at least 2 snps, upstream snps coherent.

I wonder what Azzurro would have thought of the fact that the Phoenicians were basically Sicilians and Greeks for the most part.
They were neither Sicilians nor Greeks. Most of these samples come from overseas colonies. As always, African samples are underrepresented. Anyone familiar with Punic Africa knows there is no evidence of a massive influx of Greeks, as such an event would have left significant archaeological traces. Otherwise, we would have to assume an enormous influx of Greek slaves who were entirely assimilated into Punic and Libyan cultures, an implausible scenario. Studies like Ringbauer's upcoming paper, Sarno et al. 2021, Carrión et al. 2024, etc all confirm that Carthage's expansion was primarily associated with a North African component which is also confirmed by archaeology and ancient sources.

I am not crazy about autosomal
But i look at some of the samples had levantine ancestery
They score natufian 10-15%

But you are correct that it is not there dominant element
They are mostly greek sicilian :)

Moots et al. 2022 basically confirmed what this paper shows however. There was a big Greek presence it seems. I don't think they were slaves, Carthage was a cosmopolitan trading hub. It is certainly plausible that they went there on business, and settled at least for some time.

They did not confirm anything, as Kerkouane was a small town with only 1200 inhabitants, home to Greek migrants from Sicily. This is further supported by archaeological findings:

P. Cintas particularly emphasized the strong presence of Hellenism in Kerkouane: nothing surprising, in this small city that, at the tip of Cape Bon, jutted out like a prow toward the nearby Sicily.
Serge Lancel, Carthage, Fayard, p. 346 (ebook version)

Meanwhile the North African influence is more than evident in all studies and is associated with Carthage's expansion :

Notably, they show strong genetic relationships to ancient North-African and eastern Mediterranean sources. These results mirror other emerging ancient DNA studies37,58, and are not unexpected given that the Punic center of Carthage on the North-African coast itself has roots in the eastern Mediterranean. Interestingly, the Monte Sirai individuals, predating the Villamar individuals by several centuries, show less North-African ancestry. This could be because they harbor earlier Phoenician ancestry and North-African admixture may have been unique to the later Punic context, or because they were individuals from a different ancestral background altogether.

Considering that in qpWave this individual did not form a clade with the other Balearic individuals, it is possible that these models represent an unsampled group. These results clearly demonstrate a link to North African ancestry in the Phoenician settlement of the Balearic Islands.

With respect to the ancient Punic samples from Tharros, it is worth noting how they appear genetically closer to North African populations; indeed, rather than clustering with other modern Sardinians, they instead occupy an intermediate position on the right side of the PCA plot between North African groups and Southern European Iberian populations (Figure 2).

tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/03014460.2021.1937699?journalCode=iahb20

the results obtained from the HVS-I analysis coming from grave A2 and Z, seems to highlight in the Tharros population, at least with regard to the historical period of Carthaginian control in Sardinia, a greater incidence of the North African genetic component than the autochthonous one, which is in concordance with the recently archaeological evidence (Fariselli, 2017).

And I have many other examples.

Okay. This is from the upcoming study, btw, David Reich is an author of the 2020 paper you post, he is also one of the authors of this 2025 paper:

Is there a classification of samples with their location, for example lilybaeum?

I do not know the necropolis precisely. For Sicily, I think they are from the municipality of 'Marsala' and 'Castelvetrano', both in the province of Trapani, Western Sicily. Lilybaeum is actually in the municipality of Marsala. So it might be.

It seems there are some Greek-Greekmixed individuals, thats why i want to see if these samples are from ancient Greek colonies.Nrken has posted the Coordinates of these samples, although i dont know if they are realiable enough.
