Immigration Ban the burka?

especially in times we live in where terrorist attacks are not uncommon....

You're making it sound like you live on the Israel/Lebanon border. Terrorist attacks are a very atypical phenomenon in the Western world.

And welcome back how yes no, why the "2"? Problems with your old account?

The typical way so far for smaller problems is to either ignore them or leave them to individuals or close family to deal with it. Many issues are not even a problem till they get very popular. There is a certain reason for it why society ignores same problem on small scale and starts acting only when things are going really bad for the group. Probably we can describe it in energy conservation law.
There is limited amount of energy and time that society can sacrifice for its wellbeing. If most of energy will be spent tackling small problems, then we'll run out of energy and time to fix the crippling ones. Other thing worth noting is that vast majority of smaller problems never become big, and might even go away by themselves.

OK, I think you're observing a pattern, and then extrapolating that as being the correct way to go about problems in general (debatable) and applicable to the burka issue (which I strongly contest).

We might not even know that some benign things could be problematic on large scale. Take a lonely guy playing computer game all day long. We all agree, it is his life and his choice, go ahead waste it accordingly. Now imagine half of the society plays computer games all day long, and every day. I don't think that you would find even most tolerant society being able to afford freedom like this.

I would hope that the behavior of others shouldn't encourage the stripping of freedoms from individuals so readily. Besides, it's an example that shouldn't be possible in any but the most generous of welfare states, at which point, the problem seems to be the welfare state, not the exercising of the freedom to play computer games.

It doesn't need to be computer game, could be anything even productive and beneficial. The same person nets sweaters this time, a very relaxing and rather useful thing. If somehow making sweaters turns addictive and half of society only makes sweaters, we would have too many cheap sweaters but not enough and very expensive cars, homes, anything else. Sweater prohibition would be inevitable.

This example is not economically tenable in a capitalist system, and in a socialist system, sweater production is controlled anyway.

We know well enough, from our past, culture of inequality is an issue, and will become a problem on larger scale if unchecked in Europe. Therefore problem is already identified, we just need to act accordingly for the good of western world.

I don't understand what you foresee here. A rapid increase in the inequality of men and women in the Western world? Really?

Unlike some of us think on this forum, our freedoms are not universal for all, neither should be. Our freedoms should and must stop for the people that hate and violate our freedoms, they shouldn't be universally inclusive. Our tolerance MUST stop for intolerant individuals and groups.

I agree that freedoms should not be guaranteed to people who have violated the rights of others (simply hating freedoms is another matter), and it's OK to be personally intolerant of others' intolerance (but that doesn't always mean that it should be reflected in the law). But what exactly are you suggesting needs to be done? The generalizations you're trying to draw don't seem particularly applicable to peaceful Middle Eastern migrant and refugee women who choose to wear burkas.

hey sparkey, good to see you...

well, there were several terrorist attacks in europe that had quite lot of casualties...
but it is not only about terrorists...it is security issue in general, as any person searched for by police can go around wearing burka...

old account is messed up... "server too busy" error prevents using it....
essentially I wanted to post something on YDNA section, and was here writing one of my first 10 messages, before I can use links...

it should be banned, I'm assuming if a women went and lived in a country under Islamic law and wore the things they did in Western Europe they would get in trouble or be told to cover up. I think if they're not going to be tolerant neither should other people. I'm not sure what parts of Islamic law they're forced to follow but this is just my opinion.

I dont consider it my business to make certain fashion illegal;
and i dont consider it the business of politicians either.

The burka should be banned by Western governments. It has no place in secular society

Guys keep in mind that the burkas are the most extreme version of the Islamic headscarf. This image shows all of the different kinds:

Western women have to wear hijab when traveling through many Middle east countries.Reciprocity measures should have been taken long ago.

The burqua should not be banned in public, except for security areas such as banks, airports etc. or when a police officer asks for the burqua to be raised for identification purposes. To ban it would infringe on peoples civil and religious liberties.

By nature of it's design and roots it always infringed on women's rights to free expression. When protecting burka, we might also protect rights for arranged marriages and slavery.

I believe burka should be banned in Europe, not for religious reasons, but because I am offended as a woman when I see other women being forced to wear it.

I disagree with you!
If burka will be banned then it will be against to those women who like to wear burka for following their religious obligations. Then how you can force a woman to not to wear a burka. I think its a personal decision of any person. Just consider it as a way of dressing and every one have right right to wear according to his own choice.

I don't think you will find a woman who likes to wear burka. They wear it because it is proper, traditional or a religious obligation. It is in genetic nature of woman to display their beauty and femininity, exactly what burka is designed by protective men to cover. No way women like wearing burka. If it was such a desirable garment you would see free western women wearing it too, but they don't. It should tell you something monumental about this issue.

I agree with what you say, but I believe that the decision should be that of the woman, if she wishes to cover up as her religion requires, so be it. It shouldn't be compulsory but nor should it be banned totally. As for arranged marriages, I don't agree with them, and I certainly don't agree with slavery.

What if she wishes for her parents to arrange her marriage? And what if by free will someone choses to become someone's slave?

I like to see who I talk to........anyone with covering on the face I ignore ( any covering)

If that is what the woman wants, so be it. Please forward a list of all those women who wish to be slaves. (lol)
