I like to use sarcasm sometimes, but not really at the expense of others. Usually it is in relation to a situation, where everyone can laugh. When it comes to insulting people I am pretty direct and clear. I find passive-aggressiveness to be cowardly, and emotionally constipated.
When I think of sarcastic people, I usually think of hipsters, which are basically conformist ugly nerds with dumb tattoos that dress like goofballs. I can see how these kinds of people have low-self esteem.
But like the article said, sarcasm is like spicy seasoning, a little bit can be delightful. But a lot of it will ruin your food.
