Immigration immigrants in Riace, Italy, the story the press didn't (want to) tell

That is exactly the issue. Because let's assume the opposite: Let's assume the natives weren't wiped away by disease. You still think the America's would be welcoming migrants?

I'll help you:

It's true that in the U.S. the aborigines were abused and discriminated against, and still don't form a successful part of the American dynamic. However, there weren't all that many of them in North America. If you're going to talk about "immigration" in the sense of the modern immigration to Europe from North Africa, Africa and the Near East, I think the closest analogy would be the immigration to the U.S. from Ireland and Germany in the 19th century and the Italian, Jewish and eastern Europe immigration of the last decades of the 19th century and the first few decades of the 20th century, and then the more recent immigration from Asia and Latin America.

In almost all of those cases, the people immigrating were poor, and tended at first to congregate in communities of their compatriots. In terms of the Germans, despite the difference in language, they soon began to integrate. The Irish had a harder time because they were Catholics. There was great discrimination against them, with people refusing to hire them or give them lodgings. (A famous sign used at that time was the "No Irish Need Apply" one.) A whole political party sprang up that opposed their migration, called the "Know Nothing" party.

Some of those "ethnic" neighborhoods were indeed crime ridden. There's a famous movie about the crime in the Five Points area of New York City at that time and the conflict between nativist and Irish gangs. It's called Gangs of New York. The same pattern was repeated in the late 19th and early 20th century. I don't think anyone needs to be reminded of the Mafia, although Europeans are probably not as familiar with Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky or with the Irish gangs in New York and Tammany Hall, or with Whitey Bolger and the "southie" crowd in Boston.

The point is that although it was harder for some groups than for others, with time these people were all assimilated, both because the immigrants wanted to be assimilated and because the larger society permitted it.

The Chinese and Indian immigrants in modern times faced their own issues, but they also are making the move.

Hispanic migrants are a different story. There does seem to be a faction among them, in my opinion, that feels they don't need to assimilate. It's too complicated to get into all the reasons on this kind of thread. I don't know if that will change. All of this is complicated by issues of "race" or color.

In terms of migrants from the Middle East, we don't have all that many. The Christians among them have followed the old pattern. There aren't any out of the ordinary problems in the neighborhoods of Michigan or New York where many of them originally settled. Many have intermarried and aren't even really identified with the old communities anymore. Look at Ralph Nader, Steve Jobs, the father of Queen Noor of Jordan, the former Lisa Halaby. One of my parents' favorite entertainers was Danny Thomas. His daughter Marlo was an American icon (half Italian-American). I wasn't aware for years that he was of Christian Arab descent. The recent Muslim immigrants are different, mainly, I think, because their religion separates them more, but there's nothing like what you're seeing in Europe.

I'm not sure why there is this huge difference, but I think part of it is that America sees itself as a country of immigrants, and so there is an openness to, and an acceptance of, foreigners that just doesn't exist in Europe. Of course, this openness is dependent, for most Americans, on the newcomers learning English and adopting American customs and mores. There's also increasing dissatisfaction with the fact that newer immigrants do indeed receive government benefits. I just saw a report that 50% of these new immigrants receive some government assistance, and 75% of those with children. It didn't used to be that way, I assure you. My father wouldn't even apply for unemployment benefits in the early days, despite the fact that we pay into the fund from our paychecks. He would have died rather than take welfare money. However, the whole world has changed in that way; it's not just immigrants.

Over and above all that, Americans are becoming more and more unhappy with the fact that there is so much illegal immigration, so that there's no control over who comes, whether they are ill, their skill level, nothing. In the latter part of the 19th and early 20th century the factories and farms needed bodies, no skills were necessary. That's not true today. It wasn't even true in my day, when you needed to be sponsored, to have guaranteed support for a certain amount of time, health checks, background checks, certain skills for the heads of household etc. When there isn't enough work for natives, there's less acceptance of unskilled foreigners, and especially if they have no interest in assimilating.

The issue is if their fear of migrants have any rational in reality, or it is nothing more than figment of imagination.

Hmmm, "Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan"... societies and political-economical systems built by "migrants" from peoples with higher than average IQ. Coincidence?

And don't forget, please, monoethnic Japan and South Korea..
Do Syrians have lower IQ than Georgians?

I'm glad that this Native likes modern clothing, modern weapons, modern healthcare, modrn houses and modern money. All arranged by migrants.

I don't know how to explain these suburbs there, they don't exist in Canada in spite of taking 300,000 migrants a year from around the world. Sure there are some enclaves in every city were migrants find houses more affordable and tend to conglomerate there, at least at the beginning. However not anything remotely resembling slams like district. I'm not sure why Belgium or Holland might attract "gold diggers" but not Canada?

I agree, something is wrong. I also agree flow of migrants should be controlled.

I'm just thinking maybe some sort of different help should be extended to war refugees, which overwhelm any system by hundred thousands. Few city/camps for temporary refugees in Europe? Nicer and bigger refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan financed by EU? I mean so nice, so the refugees want to stay there and not fleeing to Germany.

what do you think about this ?

Relatives of the Kurdi family have said that they were attempting to flee to relatives in Canada as their application to emigrate to Canada had been rejected by the Canadian government. However, Ottawa denied late Thursday that it had received any citizenship application from the father Abdullah Kurdi, who survived the failed attempt to reach the Greek island of Kos from the Turkish port city of Bodrum.

everybody is going to accuse everybody else
it is the war in Syria and Islamic fundamentalsim that has to be stopped
and if the UN can't handle these kind of problems it should dissolve itself

I'm shocked you are still living in this house of cards. Run, run, run fast.

1. You don't know where I live. 2. It will be your ideological brethren who will have to run from New Europe
