Religion 'Intelligent design' teaching ban in the US

Darwin said:
But the time will before long come, when it will be thought wonderful that naturalists, who were well acquainted with the comparative structure and development of man, and other mammals, should have believed that each was the work of a separate act of creation
Is Mr. Darwin here not stating that he believes that we are descended from primates by saying that the time will soon come that naturalists, like himself, should believe that man was created or am I not following his thought pattern here?
I think he was using the word 'wonderful' in a slightly different way than we usually do now - as 'incredible' in the sense of 'not credible', rather than in the sense of 'great'. Dictionary.com quotes Darwin too, for 'wonderful' as 'astonishing'. Substitute 'astonishing' for 'wonderful' above, as Bossel says.
