sounds pretty intense...

U.N. landmine commerical won't air in US.
A U.N. commercial depicts American girls playing in a soccer match. A girl steps on a landmine and there's a big explosion. Kids get blown apart. CNN and other networks don't want to air the ad.
The explosion appears to kill and injure some girls, sparking panic and chaos among parents and other children. Shrieks of horror are heard through much of the spot, and a father is shown cradling his daughter's lifeless body, moments after celebrating a goal she had scored.
It closes with a tag line reading: "If there were landmines here, would you stand for them anywhere? Help the U.N. eradicate landmines everywhere."

well... out of sight out of mind...

They don't want to have to see what others are going through.. it's too much right into the living room. The commercial is pure genious and what CNN and the others are doing is filthy and unethical at best.

It seems too graphic to be aired during the hours when kids watch TV. The fact it's made by U.N. makes me think that it is more political than giving out the message to the audience.

This commercial will raise this issue. Yes, it's graphic, but what better way to get the point across.

Ithink it's a very good commercial, really designed to target a specific audience. I think it suks that the US media tries to "protect" the public like this.

This entire thing makes me sad. The reason why the US government can't get behind most landmine treaties is because of one thing only: Korea.

The entire area between North and South Korea is completely seeded with landmines. There is no logistical way for us to remove them at this time given the state of relations between the two Koreas. It just isn't going to happen. If there's ever a change in the hositilities between those two nations where we can scrap the DMZ then I think you'll probably see some movement on this issue in the States.

Until then... It just aint gunna happen.

During the Gulf War we did. Not all of those landmines were removed. Currently we are experimenting with deploying a system called "Matrix". Basically its a bunch of claymores that can be activated by a soldier with a lap-top. While technically these are land-mines, the idea behind them is that a soldier is designating if they will blow up instead of them basically being "dumb" and blowing up anyone who comes in contact with them.

The problem with this ofcourse is that the soldier has to be able to make visual confirmation that the person(s) or objects inside the mine field are actually enemies and most likely from a very far distance.

In any case, I think to myself that this is a better area-denial weapon than the standard landmines that were used previously - however I am really wondering what the point is of using these types of munitions when you are basically fighting a guerilla insurgancy and not a standard army. To me it seems almost like a case of "Boys and their toys"... if you know what I mean.

I think more UAV's patrolling areas with marines for rapid response would be a heck of a lot better than these devices, but its pretty obvious the pentagon just wants to test these things out.
