As to surnames here in Norway, originally just first anmes were used, (possibly with an epithet like "the fat" King Olav "Digre" or "the one who made the bow-wood vibrate Einar "tambarskjelve") they were originally patronymica or matronymica just like in Iceland today, but when some first names like Ole, Nils or Hans became quite common as first names were no longer kept in the family, surnames became equally common and confusing wth many Olsen, Nilsen and Hansen.

Owners of farms could use their adress as surname and many can still identify their surnames origin by coordinates on the map (and in time since farm names have temporal fashions )

However. with people moving such as an Ole Olsen from Steinerud marrying at Braaten, their surnames would change, so this confuses genealogists even more. If they were not already totally in a geographical fog due to written records being authored by officials unfamiliar with local dialects. About a century ago surnames became obligatory and some people started to exchange their patro/matro names for geograpihcal names causing even more amateur-genealogy confusion.

Conclusion: any surname-analysis program need to be viewd with scepsis and suplemented by detailed source study-
