This map is based on the data from the CIA World Factbook as reported on Wikipedia. The percentages indicated for the increase of decrease in obesity rates are the difference between the rates for 2016 and for 2024. For example, in the United Kingdom the rate decreased from 27.8% in 2016 to 20.1% in 2024, which is a decrease of 7.7 percentage points (the value indicated on the map).

Obesity only increased in Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia, and oddly also Finland and Iceland. It decreased everywhere else in Europe, with the biggest drops being observed in Turkey, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Romania. All saw reductions from 11% to 12% in 8 years.

In contrast, obesity rates slightly increased in the US, India, China and even Japan during the same period.

Do we know any pattern why this happened? Like eating behaviour, diet?
