I am always wondering about all kinds of things. Today is the percentage of people who owns a passport in each country. Unfortunately data is not available in many smaller countries. Here is what I could find.
I could not find data for any other European country, nor for South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Argentina, etc.
In the US there are huge differences between states (as usual). The lowest is Mississippi (no big surprise) where 19.5% of citizens have a passport, closely followed by West Virginia (20.5%). The highest rates are in New Jersey (68%), Delaware (67%) and Alaska (65%). This data is a bit old though (2010). More recent data from 2023 shows that New Jersey, Massachussetts and Hawaii have the most issued passports per 100 people, while Mississippi and West Virginia are still last.
- Iceland : 95%
- Germany : 86%
- Ireland : 85%
- Israel : 83%
- Austria : 78%
- New Zealand : 75%
- Canada : 70%
- Italy, Portugal, Netherlands : 60%
- Singapore : 57%
- Australia : 55%
- France : 50-60%
- United Kingdom : 53%
- United States : 48% to 56% (depending on the source)
- Ukraine : 34%
- Japan : 19-23%
- Brazil : 20%
- China : 10-13%
- India : 7%
