The Ancient Romans are rather known and admired for their hyper-realistic sculptures and not so much for their paintings. However, I found some paintings from Pompeii that look almost like Renaissance portraits.

This a young Roman woman who looks directly at you. She doesn't appear so ancient but looks nearly like a modern person. Paintings with such perspective and angle came up again in the Renaissance art.

Other Roman paintings: This has nearly an impressionistic touch.
