What do we make of the similarities between various 'saviours'?

Jesus and Krishna

  • Both were called both a God and the Son of God.
  • Both was sent from heaven to earth in the form of a man.
  • Christ and Krishna both mean 'Savior'
  • They are both the second person of the Trinity.
  • Their adoptive human fathers were carpenters, while a spirit or ghost was their actual father.
  • Both were visited at birth by wise men and shepherds, guided by a star.
  • Jesus was called "the lion of the tribe of Judah." Krishna was called "the lion of the tribe of Saki."
  • Both claimed: "I am the Resurrection."
  • Both were "without sin."
  • Both performed many miracles, including the healing of disease.
  • Both celebrated a last supper.

Here are some similarities to other pagan gods.

It makes/allows me to see that Jesus' story is a mish/mash and partial hijacking of earlier religions.

I`ve actually been told, and read that some Christians had claimed the Devil anticipated Jesus would appear and therefore had all these other cults started to resemble Jesus' cult so that they would confuse people and make them doubt the authenticity of Jesus' cult as a way to keep people from the Truth and joining his flock.

I`ll try and add something else here soon. Interesting.

I have not considered what this must mean. There are also stories about Krishna's death that parallel the crucifixion. It is interesting.

Perhaps there are universal themes in every religion that are repeated- it says something about the commonality of the human mind and human condition.

You have done some good research there Tsuyoiko san !! It could lead us to even more that should be done, perhaps.

I voted with the last one above the 'other' selection. At the moment, it seems the more likely of the whole bunch. This 'pool' of religious thought, does seem to have had a core which spread out, but which various cultures/groups/tribes added on to and mixed--from who knows HOW long ago. (maybe into the ten thousands of years back)

That's a good point - the issue is wider than just saviours - there are similarities in the mythology of religions from all over the world. Take creation myths for example.

That's right, as far as I know, Tsuyoiko. One example would surely be the flood myth. It can be found in a number forms in a lot of tribal lore from many places in the world. Just look at the Chinese character ?D 'eight people in a boat' is what makes it up. The left side figure is basically boat, the top right is eight, and the bottom right, is mouth. The kanji mouth is very often used with, or for people, such as in the word for population: ?l??.

Joseph Campbell actually has catalogued commonalities among the world's mythologies. I'll get a link later.

Except that the kanji on the top-right of ?D is not ?l (person) but ?? (eight), so it is not ?l?? (population) but ???? (eight mouths).

P.S. In due time communists, rejecting the Christ as the Son of the God, equated itself to the Universe - and an idea even of simple "idiot", became "slogan" and millions lives of people have been destroyed under these "slogans"...
To this the Universe focuss those or other properties in one person on thousand years... Otherwise...
In a reality it are people with the congenital those or other "programs", the societies directed on this or that updating...
Other party when the society equates itself to equal to the Universe - led to to fascism, military communism, etc...

Both have undergone the same process in history, which is the transformation of an old system of belief to a new one.

Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism and the divinity of jesus was determined by the grecian influence of having demi-gods. Hinduism is modified Brahmanism wherein Krishna is one of the many avatars of Brahma.

Another parallel: in mahayana buddhism, siddharta buddha is the historical body or the human incarnate (second person) of the cosmic buddha, to preache the way to enlightenment. the cosmic buddha coincidentally, exists also in 3 facets!
