Pew Research recently published a study on social hostilities involving religion in 2023. This includes harassment, physical assaults, killings, displacements, detentions and property damage toward people belonging to other religions. The situation is concerning as the number of countries where religious groups faced government or social harassment has been constantly increasing since the survey began in 2007, and for all religious groups.
South Asia, the Middle East and Nigeria have the highest levels of social hostilities involving religion. The highest scores were Nigeria (9.0), India (8.8), Syria (8.1), Israel (8.4), Bangladesh (7.8), Pakistan (7.5), Egypt (7.1) and Libya (7.1). In Europe the worst social hostilities involving religion were observed in Ukraine (5.6), France (4.7), Sweden (4.5) and Germany (4.4).
Usually countries with more social hostilities also have have more government restrictions on religion. Germany and Sweden are exceptions.
This chart shows the correlation between religiously motivated social hostilities and restrictions on religion.
