Steve Jobs, the Apple founder who died in 2011 and is subject of an upcoming biopic by British director Danny Boyle, was the son of a Syrian man who moved to the US to study in the 1950s.
Abdul Fattah Jandali was born in 1931 to a well-off family in Homs, Syria – a city now most famous as the scene of some of the worst fighting in the country’s ongoing civil war.
He and his partner Joanne Carole Schieble had Jobs out of wedlock and were forced to give him up for adoption. They later married, and had Jobs’ biological sister Mona Simpson.
Though Jobs’ story is a world away from that of Aylan, whose death last week prompted international outrage, a simple post noting their shared Syrian heritage has been shared thousands of times on social media.
Posted by Geneva-based tech entrepreneur David Galbraith, it simply included a picture of Jobs and the caption: “A Syrian migrants’ child [sic].”
Galbraith, who was co-founder of the company where Yelp was created and helped author RSS technology, said he was a fan of Jobs and remembered his family history when news about desperate Syrian refugees made headlines around the world.

Now that refugees are front and center let us go back a few thousand years. There were wars too back then and as with with wars there are refugees. Invaders usually kill those who oppose them in battle but they can scare the rest or chase them by burning their homes. It is so much the better as it is easier and less risky. The steppe pastoralists with their cattle , sheep and goats wanted land so they conquered Europe and in 1200 BC there was a massive people movement with women and children in ox carts trundling along looking for land with men in infantry weapons. Yes, It was the bronze Age collapse. I wrote that in response to a 'Roberts' post years ago that refugees could have provided the manpower to the Sea Peoples' land and sea invasions as they were driven from what is today France and Spain.

We are all humans and we all deserve a fair chance in life.

Steve Jobs wasn't the son of Syrian immigrants, and even less of refugees. His mother, Joanne Schieble Simpson, is American of Swiss and German descent. His biological father, Abdulfattah Jandali, was a self-made Syrian millionaire who studied at the American University of Beirut (Lebanon), then did a PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he met Steve's mother. When Joanne got pregnant, Abdulfattah's parents in Syria refused that they got married as she was not Muslim, and the baby was given up for adoption.

The story is closer to that of Barack Obama, whose mother was also an American of Central/Northwest European descent, and whose father was a rich and educated Muslim. His parents also met at university in the US and the father went back to his country (Kenya) when Barack was two years old.

On a side note, it gives me goosebumps to believe I studied at the same Middle school Mommy Obama studied in and to hear that interrelationship love story, it's just amazing O-O. As for the inter religion border between Muslims/non-Muslims, I feel like it's a shame that the Muslim/Christian babies have to go to adoptions for we could really learn from our traditions.

Either way, Steve Jobs was not a Muslim. If he was, he would not have found enough time between his 5 prayers per day to develop anything meaningful...

One does not have to be Muslim to have Muslim ancestors, religion is not really genetically inherited. Although you could be influenced by a religion or school.

Another Syrian (or not Syrian?) "child migrant":

This is a picture taken of a TV-show where pupils asked the minister of education some questions.

The boy in the blue shirt came to Sweden as an underage refugee. Because age-testing migrants is considered racist and inhumane by the swedish refugee-establishment (all political parties except SD and refugee NGOs, who are very powerful in Sweden), his age was never tested and the authorities accepted his version as they do with all migrants.

Afterwards, a politician from the right-wing SD party posted this pic with the title "classmates" (quote unquote), making fun of the pretty obvious fact that the "boy" in the blue shirt is at least some years older than his class mates.

This, of course, caused an massive uproar on twitter (surprise), the politician is acused of hate speech and racism, among others by the minister of education Gustav Fridolin (green party).

His white-passing looks and name precluded him from being racialized as an arab. Thus his biological father's heritage has zero to no effect on his success. Unless we're attributing his ascent to middle eastern biological predisposition, which i have never heard of.
