US Elections Trump may not be as bad as he appears

Isn't it possible to imagine that if America were indigenous, there perhaps would be no NATO, and American troops would be in Greenland defending European interests? It's a very interesting thing for me to imagine

I am not defending Trump. My preference is that America were never colonized. In this scenario, Greenland seems a natural flashpoint between the Americas and Europe.

Especially it seems the future possibility of a militarized Germany/EU stationing significantly in Greenland has put Trump in the same "strategical defeat" mindset as Putin.

Well.....may be your POTUS has a different relationship with the native Americans than Putin supposed to have with Rus ;)

And may it were your Scandic ancestors were the party poopers in Greenland, Erik the Red in the first place:

Actually my worries about the situation in the world are to great to real get into that kind of escapism. The world holds its breath....and I'm not going to worry about the world before Peter Stuyvesant....let alone Erik the Red, sorry!

I am simply trying to explain why the discussion of Canada and Greenland is not as crazy as people make it sound today.

I am trying to imagine the alternative to a mindset that the US and EU are twins or siblings. In this alternative, posturing for greater territory in North America and disinvesting from the EU makes a lot of sense. So perhaps that is where Trump is thinking. The reference to the indigenous population is only to represent this mindset.

My commentary is not that this is right or just

In reality there is no real bond between the US, Canada, and Greenland the way the indigenous isolates would be. That would take centuries

Anyway that should be enough politics for 2025. I'll be back on youtube listening to anime songs for the rest of the year

Musk should stick to space travel.

In any case the richest man in the world, or any obscenely rich man, should not be allowed to help run a nation.

Those who believe that oligarchs like Trump and Musk care a jot about ordinary people are truly deluding themselves.
Musk mentioned in an old interview that Empathy is a human weakness to be discarded. That's all one needs to hear to know that this man entrusted with dealing with important decision making spells trouble. And before anyone comes to his defense, i think both left and right are a problem. Right and wrong are not party specific. They just are.

Interesting how it seemed he was sucking up to Russia during that Zelensky conversation... imagine talking like that to a man whose country has been invaded. Except for maybe Crimea and Donbas, most of Ukraine does not want to be part of Russia or have anything to do with Russia so this is clearly an invasion. In Russia alone you got territories that are ethnically non-Russian but under Russian occupation such as Chechnya and others. Also interesting how Russia supported Abkhazian and Ossetian independence yet invaded Georgia. In the Balkans, Russia has also supported Serbian independence and expansionism since the 19th-20th century which is why they also mingle in the conflicts there. They also supported the partition of Albania.

In Norwegian newspapers and media they are now saying Trump has been basically bought by Russia and is getting paid by Russia apparently.

Ukrainians can't help but be a part of Russia, because Ukrainians and Russians are one ethnicity. They don't have history separate of Russia. It's a joke.

So what we see is an act of cannibalism?

So what we see is an act of cannibalism?

Rather East Slavic self-destruction, because the Ukrainians were manipulated and drawn into this useless war. Most importantly, the Ukrainians themselves voted for peace and understanding with Russia, that's why they voted for Selenskyj, this actor who pretended to be a peacemaker.
But as soon as he was voted for, and especially after the inauguration of Biden, he went amok, since the Selenskyj regime:
- started to bombard the Don separatists relentlessly, causing many civilian victims
- received huge amounts of weapons from America and prepared an attack on the Don separatists and was willing to attack Crimea even
- completely ignored the Minsk peace agreement
- started to outlaw all opposition parties, media and organisations which were in any way not for the war and probably more Russian-friendly
- censorship was installed on a grande scale
- Russian language should be pushed back in Ukraine, even the Russian orthodox church
- they cut off Crimea from the water supply
- Selenskyj spoke out for a Ukraine becoming a nuclear power
- Selenskyj made Ukraine becoming a NATO and EU member non-negotiable
- Selenskyj used all kinds of anti-Russian rhetoric in an aggressive fashion, making clear that he wants absolutely no compromise and wants to hurt the Russian regime as much as he can
- he even imprisoned a whole lot of prominent politicians to avoid any serious opposition and that way made clear that he wasn't interested in any sort of political solution with Russia.
etc.

When the parties were banned many many members were imprisoned after the start of the war, this was the end for any free political debate on the issue in Ukraine:

It is important to note that the censorship started already before the war:
On 16 May 2017 president Poroshenko signed a decree banning various Russian internet service providers and news sources, among others, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Yandex, Rossiya Segodnya, RBC, VGTRK, but also a number of independent stations such as the RBC, claiming this was done for "security reasons".[78][79] Tanya Cooper from Human Rights Watch called the decree: "a cynical, politically expedient attack on the right to information affecting millions of Ukrainians, and their personal and professional lives".[71] Reporters Without Borders (RSF) also condemned the ban imposed on Russian social networks.

At the same time, when Russian brought the attacks on the Don separatists before the UN, they were blocked, and when asking the Americans for negotiations to prevent an escalation, the only message they got was: There is nothing to talk about, everything we do, anything the Selenskyj regime does is non-negotiable and you have to accept it.

Now after the inauguration of Biden and Selenskyj going for an escalation, it was absolutely clear that Russia had to do something, and this has zero to do with any kind of plans of Russia to attack the rest of Europe and crap like that, this was just a massive escalation in the Ukrainian theatre.

But as bad as it was, the Russians still agreed on a very, very generous peace agreement with the Ukrainians, the Istanbul agreement. This was at a time when there were only few casualties and destructions caused, compared to the status quo. The whole escalation into such a brutal and self-destructive war could have been prevented, but after the negotiations the Biden Americans, but especially the British caused yet another round of escalation:

- They told the Ukrainians that if they accept that agreement, they are largely on their own. A typical British maneuver to push an "ally" into an escalation: Either you go with us and make no deal, or you escalate and we will provide you with help to withstand.
That kind of blackmailing worked, if the Ukrainians were serious about the Istanbul agreement themselves in the first place. But in any case, the British and Americans pushed the Ukrainians into another round of escalations.

And that's where we are now, because of these events and decisions.

There are people in America and Britain which are happy about this, or were happy about it, since they had managed to make these two Eastern European people to mangle themselves.

But it got even worse, because when they recognised that Russia might come out as a big, even geostrategical winner, the whole game became even more serious for these Atlantic bridge gamers, and this is which really makes me concerned, because the worst thing which could happen is not whether Russia or Ukraine wins, but whether there is a global escalation in the direction of World War III.
And that is something which needs to be prevented, which inevitably means we need serious and honest negotiations. These are way more likely and possible with the Trump administration, than they would have been with Biden/Harris.

Therefore there is hope now, where there was just desperation before. And in the end, when all things are said and done, the Ukrainians, many of them, will see how they were deceived and lured into this trap. That it would have been best never to become confrontational with Russia, and at the very least, when they saw Russia became serious, to accept the Istanbul agreement and to end this horrible war before it became the mess they are in right now.

Every day more of this horrible war means just more victims on all sides and the Ukrainian prospects and ability to make an acceptable deal becoming worse. This war must end, that's it.

My position on this is quite simple, a nation has the right to self-determination. If Ukraine chooses to join Europe instead of Europe, then that is up to Ukraine itself. It is Putin who, out of a form of revanchism and a claim to become a kind of new tsar, restores the Russian Empire. That ultimately led to a brutal invasion of Ukraine three years ago, which cannot possibly be justified in my eyes. And in my opinion we are far from finished with it, the last thing we need in Europe is the advance of Russian hordes. It is high time that countries like Poland and Germany have a nuclear arsenal. Better yet, in a coordinated European context. No need for an autocratic Russian yoke.

I was always in favor of a Pax Americana, traditionally we share many values. But when President Trump has more in common with Putin and starts parroting him than with the Europeans, it is high time that we put a stop to this.

First, the Americans and NATO broke all promises given to the Russians at the end of the Cold War and did encroach on Russia in a very disrespectful and dangerous way. Russia even gave NATO the opportunity to cooperate, but they then made clear, that its about keeping Russia out and contained, ultimately eliminated as a power, and nothing else.

That's why Putins Russia was very cooperative in the first years of his rule, but changed its stance once they learned that there was nothing to ask or gain for from the NATO alliance, even on the contrary.

Secondly, the regime changes in various countries, both the achieved and the ones attempted, being largely orchestrated by American organisations and secret services, most prominently the CIA. This too was in many instances a foreign interference and attack, even if one done by agents, money and manipulation.

Thirdly, it is pure hypocrisy to even judge Russia like that, since the Americans would never ever accept something similar in their proximate neighbourhood. Never. Do I need to remind you on all the invasions and coup d'état done by the USA and Britain? Really?
Like Allende, Mossadegh, Lumumba?

Or the whole kind of "pax Americana" created in the Middle East and North Africa, by all those violent invasions and regime changes (to the worse)? Or the consequences which Europe has to pay, both in terms of migrations and help programs, or the consequences of this awful war for our economy and prosperity?

Obama and Biden in particular were warmongers in practise, which makes it all the more absurd if someone calls Trump reckless, because they were, they played those wargames with real victims, they ruined countries and the international rule based order.

The Americans broke since the 1990's every agreement and rule you can think about, either directly or indirectly. They are the last ones to judge anyone, since Ukraine is at least part-Russian in so many respects and in the direct neighbourhood of Russia, but was the Americans and British excuse for all their "interventions"?

The only presidency which was rather peaceful and moderate was that of Trump, by far. Obama also started the worlwide drone assassination program, probably another reason for his "peace nobel prize" and another piece of evidence how rigged the "Western" system is.

There is no moral or whatsoever superiority of the USA, especially not the Neocon-style policy of the last decades and the presidencies of Obama and Biden, which were the worst. What peace are you talking about?

The only peace there was, was in Europe, and that was achieved by the greater powers respecting each other. Obama and Biden made clear that they have no respect for Russia and want to pull their state down and tear it into even smaller pieces, and that is what led to this, nothing else.

I listened to John Mearsheimer before the escalation, did you? He was right then and nothing of this had to happen, if the USA woudn't have ran amok because they dreamt of world domination by force and putting one of their remaining competitors down after another. Now they have made Russia and China partners, closer than they would have been otherwise, and much of the world can clearly see how hypocritical the West always was, even those which didn't realise it before.

Just read what other, more objective commentators from around the world have to say about "Western moral standards".

But the first to be betrayed were the brave Ukrainians themselves, which were deceived and lured into this massacre, just to hurt the Russians, which was always the real goal behind all of this. It is truly disgusting when some Western commentators still keep up their "moral indignation", as if anyone could take them serious any longer.
They betray their own people all the time, and they betray the world, and this whole show is just a mess.

No moral high ground in any case.

Britain was called "Perfidious Albion" for good reasons and the USA is similar.

I've always heard that money is not a problem, it's a solution and it seems that lack of money is not a problem to Germany. The country will have 1 trillion euros to invest, but it doesn't know how to do this for while because the country needs rapid planning and more skilled workers to do it . Trump has a little parcel of guilty on forcing the German parliament paved the way to this investments since part of them goes to armaments industry of country.

How will Germany spend its €1 trillion loans?

For large parts of Europe, the Pax Americana has worked well, 80 years of peace, freedom and prosperity. It is true that there is a lot of hypocracy in the world. And that the Americans are not exempt from this either. I am not making a moralistic argument (despite the fact that I am Dutch, I undoubtedly have a knack for it ;) It simply does not justify the fact that the Russians have invaded a sovereign country. And Putin's intentions are clear. I do not like autocratic regimes, so I would like to keep that Russian bear at a distance, preferably stuck somewhere behind the Urals, towards China. And that also applies to that other uncouth bear in the US who is starting to behave towards Denmark in the same way as Putin does towards the Ukraine, idiocy at its peak.

@Duarte Germany has come a long way, Duarte. After the Second World War, we had two of them and most European neighbours were of the opinion that they should tone it down for the time being. But don't underestimate them, when the light is green for huge investments, they will go for it. And I am convinced that Putin will not even think about attacking Germany armed to the teeth.... Unless the AfD comes to power, then they are able to affiliate with Putin. But I estimate that Putin will not burn himself on the furor teutonicus, don't you think so Duarte?

Dear @Northener
If there is one country whose resilience and ability to overcome crises cannot be ignored, it is Germany. During the Cold War, it was said of East Germany that “those damned Germans are capable of making even communism work.”
I do not doubt the Germans' ability to become strong and enough to confront the Russians and even the Americans. Now, to be honest with you, I never believed that Vladimir Putin's Russia would have any interest in attacking Germany or any other country that was never part of the former Soviet Union's sphere of influence. I agree with everything Riverman said about NATO. I do not believe in the slightest that Putin had or has any interest in carrying out sporadic or mass attacks, not even against the hysterical Baltic countries and Poland, much less against Finland and Sweden. Now, if these countries decided to paint a target on their foreheads by staying under NATO's umbrella, that is their problem. A false sense of security. If anyone believes that if Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty is triggered because Russia has attacked or is returning an attack from any European NATO member and that everything will be like George Lucas' Star Wars, with state-of-the-art pyrotechnic toys moving back and forth across land, air and sea, they are completely mistaken. The moment Article 5 is invoked, Putin's nuclear deterrence will be immediate and instantaneous, because it is what the best that he has, and is for that that Russia has always been prepared since ever (for Germany it would also be a huge challenge in terms of intelligence, technology, planning, training, production, etc., etc. for a country that has not produced a nuclear device in 80 years and has decided to give up the use of nuclear energy even for peaceful purposes - they say that the Nazis produced some primitive nuclear warheads, but I don't know if that is true or an urban legend). That said, I believe that Germany should start developing its nuclear weapons now and, as the delivery schedule is met, have them ready to be fired and with specific targets from land, air, sea and space, because that is what the other side has been doing for a long time. I hate to agree with Trump, but what Zelensky really wants is a third world war because this conventional war with Russia is unwinnable. The Russians will not return what they have already taken and if they are not able to conquer Ukraine completely in a conventional war while the West (with or without Trump) maintains support in weapons and logistics, they will keep the war going indefinitely.
Greetings

I only disagree with you in claiming Zelensky wants WW3.

Dear @Duarte, the most likely scenario is that Merz and Macron (and the Benelux?) reach an agreement on the broadening of the French nuclear umbrella, but as soon as Le Pen comes to power we will see a repeat of Trump's moves.....Werner von Braun was of course a 'transfer' from NAZI Germany to the US Apollo program. But whether the Germans were in possession of an embryonic nuclear weapon....seems to me to be urban legend. I do not share your 'optimism' regarding the Baltics, they could well be a willing victim, of course they have always been under the Russian (SU) sphere of influence. They are small countries that can be overrun quite easily. Incidentally, this is also partly former Prussia... Those countries know the tricks of the Russian whip, so I do not find them hysterical.
