Vast Medieval Palace Discovered Underneath Pre-Historic Fortress at Old Sarum

It's incredible that it was forgotten for so many centuries. It's also unclear to me how it could be under the fortress.

Here is the article:

I think Angela, they are using the term fortress in this instance as way of specifying a fortified place, the ditch earthworks being the defence system, ...if this is what you are wondering. It was an old iron age hill fort primarily.
We have always been aware of the castle here but this is the first a map has been seen showing the town that may have been around it, and also, of course the lay out of the castle itself. Old Sarum is actually the original Salisbury, before they moved it a few miles to where we all know to-day as Salisbury.
Great to get this lay out of the whole area seen like this, isn`t it? I`m sure there will be more that will come to light...:)

I bought a historical novel called "Sarum" a couple of years ago, but although I read some of it, I didn't get very far. I think maybe I'll get it out and start reading it again...just take it in chunks.

I've never been to Salisbury, although I was in London once for about a week years ago. On my bucket list is a trip to England using the Oxford Guide to Literary England and Ireland, and Salisbury would be included too.

Pretty nerdy, I know. :)

I know I'm going a bit off topic, but if you do get to England, make sure you budget lots of time for the bookstores in Oxford.
