Tower Bridge, an architectural masterpiece combining Neo-Gothic style with innovative Victorian engineering, stands as one of London's most recognizable landmarks. Completed in 1894, this combined bascule and suspension bridge spans 240 meters across the River Thames, connecting the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark.

The bridge was constructed between 1886 and 1894 to accommodate London's expanding eastern population while maintaining access to the busy Pool of London docks. The project, designed by Sir Horace Jones and engineered by Sir John Wolfe Barry, required 432 workers, 11,000 tonnes of steel, and cost £1,184,000 (equivalent to approximately £150 million today).

The bridge's distinctive features include two 61-meter-tall towers connected by two high-level glass-covered walkways, offering spectacular views of London 42 meters above the Thames. Its bascule (drawbridge) design allows the central span to open for river traffic, which still takes priority over road users. The bridge opens approximately 850 times annually, serving both maritime traffic and the 40,000 daily road crossings.

Originally powered by steam-driven hydraulic systems, the bridge was converted to electric-hydraulic operation in 1976. Visitors can still view the original Victorian engine rooms, which are preserved as part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

Today, Tower Bridge welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM). The exhibition includes access to the towers, walkways with glass floors, and the historic engine rooms. The upper walkways at the top of the northern tower, 45 metres above the river, guarantees breathtaking views (except on foggy days). Tickets cost £13.40 for adults and £6.70 for children. The bridge offers full accessibility, including lifts for those who need them.

Special consideration is given to visitors with additional needs through Relaxed Opening hours, held on the second Saturday of each month from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, when visitor numbers are limited and sound levels are reduced.
