Description
One of London's most famous landmarks, the twin-towered bridged across the Thames is a testimony of London's past as the capital of a vast sea-based commercial empire. Built between 1886 and 1894, this great feat of Victorian engineering was designed as a suspension bridge combined with a bascule to let large ships navigate to the inner dockyards, known as the Pool of London. The original raising mechanism was powered by pressurised water stored in several hydraulic accumulators. It is now activated electronically.
The Tower Bridge Exhibition will take you to the top of the northern tower for a stroll on the upper walkways, 45 metres above the river, with guaranteed breathtaking views (except on foggy days).
