Christians Have Gone Too Far

Christian culture has very little influence in our broad pluralistic capitalist society.

Wow. Do you really think that? Religion has influenced politics (or been used by politicians for influence) since the beginning of recorded history. How do you think georgie got elected twice? and if that isn't an influence on our 'broad pluralistic capitalist society' nothing could be.

The recent phenomenon of the religious right in the US is defininetly a calculated strategy by leading Republican members to attain political power. (Not that I'm a Democrat). But there is just so far you can go to push the envelope ... the recent actions about the Schiavo case are a prime example. It is clear in our Constitution that there MUST be a seperation of church and state. That line is diminishing at a rapid pace and in many areas has become indistinguishable.

Do you think Dubya got elected because he was connected to the Christian right, or because he is connected to big money? As gas prices hit new highs, which of his friends are getting more wealthy. As we give tax cuts to the rich or pass his latest give away the farm energy bill- do you think Chistians benefit from this? The question is who is using who? A couple of million easy votes for some vague right winged promises about abortion. Sounds like a pretty easy deal.

the wealthy in the country make up only a VERY small percentage of the population, and georgie got elected by receiving over 50% of the popular vote. And yes, all Christian churches' pastors in America basically told all congretional members to vote for George ... not only to vote .. but that God wanted them too. Not only did they (churches) get involved as a collaborative effort for the presidential election, but also for congressional elections. Hell even the catholic church got involved with a leading cardinal from the vatican telling members not to vote for people who support abortion rights .. which led to much media press at the end of the election (i.e. john kerry couldn't receive communion b/c he supported a woman's right to choose).

Most people don't vote. Most poor people don't vote. They certainly don't contribute to political parties or campaigns, nor do they attend $10,000 per plate fundraisers. Money makes a huge difference. Just ask Ken Lay. (W's "Kenny-Boy")

My pastor doesn't tell me how to vote. I don't think it is good theology to say that God favors Republicans. And I think most pastors would agree. I don't think many pastors tell congregations how they have to vote, but I bet the majority of African American congregations, Latino congregations, Catholics, and old line Presbyterian, Lutheran, and even Baptist congregants did not vote for Bush. Christians are not some monolithic right wing bloc. Most actually think for themselves. (Just look at how Catholic Americans poll in issues such as birth control.)

Well I don't think the issue I originally trying to point out was that ALL Christians were bad, but rather the small number of them in the government that are using their religious beliefs for political gain. To me they are really pathetic and need to be drug out into the street and shot. Mainly because it sets the precedent that ALL Christians are like that, when in reality only a small number of them are.
