An upcoming paper from the Reich Lab: Disparate demographic impacts of the Roman Colonization and the Migration Period in the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract
It has been unclear how the periods of Roman and later Germanic political control shaped the demography of the Iberian Peninsula and how Iberia differs in these respects from other parts of the Roman Empire. We report genome-wide data from 248 ancient individuals from the largely unsampled period 100-800 CE and co-analyze them with previously reported data. In the Roman era, we document profound demographic transformation, with an influx of people with ancestry from the Central and Eastern Mediterranean in all the areas under study and of North Africans, especially in central and southern Iberia. Germanic (Buri, Suebi, Vandals & Visigoths) and Sarmatian (Alans) took over political control beginning in the 5th century, and although we identify individuals with Germanic-associated ancestry at sites with Germanic-style ornaments and observe that such individuals were closely related across large distances as in the case of two siblings separated by 700 km, for Iberia as a whole, we observe high continuity with the previous Hispano-Roman population. The demographic patterns in Iberia contrast sharply with those in Britain, which showed the opposite pattern of little change in the Roman period followed by great change in the Migration period, and also from demographic patterns in the central Mediterranean where both periods were associated with profound transformation, raising broader questions about the forces that precipitated change over this time.

Here is a more concise list of the 90 samples with a Y-DNA haplogroup attributed. A considerable percentage of E-V13, J1 and J2a in Iberia appear to have been brought by the Visigothic confederation (most probably people assimilated in the Balkans), although J1 and J2a were already present in Roman times.

The Goths, the oldest known Germanic people, had J2 & J1 and no R1b-U106 & R1a-Z284, it clearly shows who the original Germanic people were.

The Goths were originally a Germanic people back in Scandinavia. When they migrated to what is now Poland and Ukraine, they mixed with local R1a tribes related to Proto-Slavs. After entering the Roman Empire, many people from Southeast Europe, especially around Thrace joined their ranks due to dissatisfaction and poverty in the region in the 4th century. I have explained this many times on this forum for the past 15 years, notably here (in 2013) here (in 2015) and here (in 2018). That's nothing new.

In this study we see J1-P58 among the Goths, this is the main haplogroup of the Eastern Semitic Akkadians, the Akkadian empire was conquered by the Gutians, according to Germanic substrate hypothesis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_substrate_hypothesis modern linguists, such as Theo Vennemann and McWhorter, strongly support the hypothesis of a Semitic superstrate on proto-Germanic.

Chiaroni et al. 2010 explain that in more detail. They estimate that J1-P58 started expanding from 7000 BCE, first colonising the Levant, Iraq, Ethiopia, Yemen and Oman. The colonisation of Arabia itself (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrein), northern Syria, Anatolia and Sudan took place during the Bronze Age, between 5000 and 3000 BCE. In light of this, if the timing is correct, it is very possible that J1-P58 was already present in both Sumer and Elam in the 5th and 4th millennium BCE.

It was reported as early as the reign of Shar-Kali-Sharri of Akkad (c. 2100 BCE) that the Gutians, semi-nomadic tribes from the central Zagros mountains, had invaded Mesopotamia, settled in Akkad and Sumer and even came to rule several city-states there. Mountain pastoralists have invaded the plains of the Fertile Crescent during most of ancient history. I believe that many mountain tribes in the Near East were J1 and J2, although in the case of the Gutians they might have been R1b people, as the Gutians were described as fair-skinned and light haired. Rather than an early Indo-European invasion, these Gutians might have been remnants of the R1b (P25, P297, M269 or M73) that did not migrate to the Pontic Steppe.

I think that if there was any superstrate on very early IE, it was potentially via Y-DNA E-L618 North of Carpathians.

Rasmus Bjorn explains here about potential loanwords from an early Old European Afro-Asiatic language potentially related to Proto-Semitic:

The study examines the archaeolinguistic implications of Semitoid loanwords in Proto-Indo-European. Contact linguistics offer a unique opportunity to calibrate speech communities in relation to each other, but the Steppe hypothesis of Indo-European does not contain a concise explanation of the immutable similarities in primarily Neolithic vocabulary shared with Southwest Asian speech communities. The study introduces a baseline of 21 pivotal items with the distribution and age in both Indo-European and Semitic that should be accounted for. It is concluded that a parsimonious archaeolinguistic scenario is available on the “persistent frontier” between the early European farmers and the nascent Steppe pastoralists on the eastern perimeter of the Carpathians. Subject to further scrutiny, a sub-family here called Old Balkanic on the Afro-Asiatic language tree is posited as the source of the Semitoid words in Proto-Indo-European.

But, this is all speculation, but i would say way more convincing than the Gutians, Akkadians.

Agree. This sample has East Mediterranean-West Anatolia Roman/Byzantine ancestry. The authors attribute J2a in Iberia to the East Mediterranean and cite studies. The L70 guys really got around in the Roman world. That is interesting in itself, the prominence of this haplogroup so far in the Roman world, including East Roman.

Indeed, the other recent roman L70 sample, from the german Limes (Leiden, Netherlands) from early imperial times, also shows that they were one of the most relevant roman haplogroups everywhere in the Empire. Hopefully on the new paper that should be published soon, with samples from Magna Graecia, we will get further news from this HG in the Italian peninsula.
