Fine-scale sampling uncovers the complexity of migrations in 5th–6th century Pannonia​

Summary​

As the collapse of the Western Roman Empire accelerated during the 4th and 5th centuries, arriving “barbarian” groups began to establish new communities in the border provinces of the declining (and eventually former) empire. This was a time of significant cultural and political change throughout not only these border regions but Europe as a whole. To better understand post-Roman community formation in one of these key frontier zones after the collapse of the Hunnic movement, we generated new paleogenomic data for a set of 38 burials from a time series of three 5th century cemeteries at Lake Balaton, Hungary. We utilized a comprehensive sampling approach to characterize these cemeteries along with data from 38 additional burials from a previously published mid-6th century site and analyzed them alongside data from over 550 penecontemporaneous individuals. The range of genetic diversity in all four of these local burial communities is extensive and wider ranging than penecontemporaneous Europeans sequenced to date. Despite many commonalities in burial customs and demography, we find that there were substantial differences in genetic ancestry between the sites. We detect evidence of northern European gene flow into the Lake Balaton region. Additionally, we observe a statistically significant association between dress artifacts and genetic ancestry among 5th century genetically female burials. Our analysis shows that the formation of early Medieval communities was a multifarious process even at a local level, consisting of genetically heterogeneous groups.

Here are the Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups of the 54 samples. Unfortunately they didn't mention the final SNP and didn't test very deep clades. Most Italian R1b are R1b1a1b1a1a2, which is R-P312. Only one is R1b1a1b1a1a2b (U152), although it could just be that the P312 were not tested for deep enough clades.

Almost none of the samples from Bardonecchia and Torino are of Central or Northern European make up. It looks like this finally puts to rest the tired idea of Italians being the mixed offspring of Germans/Northerners and Near Easterners. Out of the 15 sample total only one (6.6%) sample (T10US67) clusters with modern French and none cluster with Germans. If Barbarians were to in fact have a large impact on the Italian genome as some have proposed then you would necessarily see a much larger amount of individuals associated with thoroughly Central or Northern Euorpean descent to facilitate such a change, yet no such phenomenon is seen. What's more is that the time frame of these samples of 550-650ad is the exact 100 year span that the Lombards entered and settled Italy. This era should be representative of the highest amount of genetic influx of Germanics into Italy and yet only one sample appears to have origins north of the alps.

Three samples cluster in the Aosta Valley/Provence genetic region (20%). I see this region as effectively the northern limit of Italian like DNA and the southern limit of French like DNA. These types have likely been in parts of Italy and the prealps since the bronze or iron age so it's not surprising to find them. The rest cluster between central and northern Italy (73.4%). The more rural Bardonecchia in particular shows a very strong affinity to modern Northern Italians where as Torino is more diverse with perhaps more of a legacy from Roman Imperial colonization - an era that likely brought individuals from mainly central and southern italy to settle the largest cities. I think these populations together will be representative of the norm for Roman era Northern Italians with the modern-like Northern Italian genome being found more strongly in rural regions and likely furnishing higher fertility rates, thus leading to the gradual reduction of central Italian like profiles over many centuries. Either way this strongly evidences the reality that the barbarian migrations were very small in number as previously noted by even the Longobards themselves in their own history.

You can see exactly where they plot on a PCA. The overwhelming norm is with modern northern Italians.

I agree with you. I hope that these LA Italian samples will be the key to breaking down the hypothesis that modern North-Central Italians have a 20% Germanic admixture.
