I'm just trying to come up with a solution that keeps everyone happy...
Seems impossible. Even if you just call it civil union there seem to be many people in the US who are against it.

Florida's Southern Baptists want constitutional ban on gay unions
"On Election Day, voters in 11 states approved bans on same-sex marriages.
The amendments passed in Mississippi, Montana and Oregon referred only to marriage, specifying that it should be limited to unions between one man and one woman. The measures in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah called for a ban on civil unions as well. "

& in Texas they can't even have it when non-"sacred" unions are mentioned in the textbooks:
Health Textbooks in Texas to Change Wording About Marriage

If the NYT link doesn't work:
Texas school panel forces changes to books on health

" On Thursday, a board member said that proposed new books ran counter to a Texas law banning the recognition of gay civil unions because the texts used terms like "married partners" instead of "husband and wife."
[...]
The other publisher, Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, changed phrases like "when two people marry" and "partners" to "when a man and a woman marry" and "husbands and wives.""

****ing reactionaries... It's sad that this stuff is still happening in the 21st century.

Well, that seems oppressive to me, but at least evolution won a victory! :D:D

The Washington Times said:
A controversy arose last year in Texas when the board approved new biology textbooks that contained Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, brushing aside opposition from religious groups.

That's right; I'm a fan of evolution. :spray::cheer::cracker::confetti::beer:

I don't know about everyone else,

but this really scares me.

Wisconsin School OKs Creationism Teaching

:worried:

School board members believed that a state law governing the teaching of evolution was too restrictive. The science curriculum "should not be totally inclusive of just one scientific theory," said Joni Burgin, superintendent of the district of 1,000 students in northwest Wisconsin.

-Creationism ISN'T A SCIENTIFIC THEORY!

True, there are some churches that will give it to them. I had forgotten about that. I was thinking about Christian gays who wanted the religious ceremony (I know, it sounds out there), but I believe that there are some Christian churches that perform marriages for gays anyway. They may be hard to find, but I believe they exist nonetheless. I guess all of that just slipped my mind earlier.:bluush:
All major cities nowadays have widely available gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender, and whatever other-oriented churches & synagogues (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish even Mennonite I believe); although of course smaller-medium size college towns for instance might only be able to offer a gay-friendly environment where there would be an enclave within the full body and it's doubtful you could arrange such a service.

I'm not at all certain that religious convictions should be translated into laws that affect the liberties and freedoms of consenting adults. I'm certain that a lot of my behavior is proscribed by somebodies religion- should we outlaw pork? Should we outlaw meat altogether? What about women wearing jeans and running around with their heads uncovered. I believe that homosexuality is a sin (Yes, even though it's "natural," everyone sins- that's natural). But so what? Laws aren't decided by what one group thinks is a sin.

I am not deriding anyone's religious beliefs. No one has explained why for secular reason a civil union or marriage between persons of the same sex should be banned. If gay marriage was legal in all 50 states, would more people be gay? Would we lose tax revenues? How does it hurt the traditional family? I don't think we're talking about a very high percentage of the population.

I would like to confirm that gay marriages have been legalized in Belgium in 2003.

wow, this thread hasn't stopped yet? I haven't checked it in awhile. Can one of the mods change the name of the thread? It kinda makes me look bad, considering I have no participation in it anymore. Thanks!!
