Yes, I guess they liked the climate. The one from the Roman Villa in Tarragona is intriguing. I like Tarragona, nice city, and nice amphitheater, too. I like Catalonia as a whole a lot, feel very "at home" there.

I think Nero's "Golden House" was probably beyond the means of our distant relatives.

However, going by the virtual reconstruction of this Roman villa in Spain, I'd be happy to live there...

I'm starting to find that these values are wrong. For example, R1548 is supposed to be my number 1 on MTA, but it is far from it. Currently R973 is my number on the Dodecad K12b version I am compiling on mlukas's site.

The Dodecad calculators usually gave better fits for Italians than Eurogenes did.

I get why my husband gets Ashkenazim in Dodecad as third best fit sometimes: he's close to 850, which is close to Crete, and the Ashkenazi Jews are also close to Crete.

I'm not sure who they were. All we know is that Szolad was part of an area in Pannonia which remained "Romanized" for a long time, and then was also under Byzantine rule for a time.

"Pannonia, a province of the Western Roman empire, was devastated by the barbarian invasions (Huns, Gepids, Avars, etc.). Only a few thousand Romanized Pannonians survived the onslaughts,^{[dubious – discuss]} mainly around Lake Pelso (now lake Balaton) in small fortified villages such as Keszthely.

Roman Pannonia and surrounding areas​

It's undeniable that some of the samples are Greek like, and even island Greek like, while others are Tuscan like.


I'm very close to SZ36 and I'm part Tuscan. Stuvane is also very close to him and he's from the Romagna. I'm not surprised that Albanians are getting hits with them. They're coming up on my calculator results quite often.

The two Szolad samples to which I'm closest are a mixture of TSI Tuscan, IBS Spanish, and a minority British component. I wish they'd used something other than 1000 Genomes, but it's undeniable some of them are extremely close to modern Italians.

Were the Avars Slavs? Or a Slavicized group? From what I've read, the Longobards didn't stay in Pannonia very long but given its location, it's not surprising that different groups passed through the area.

The Vlachs (Aromanian) large presence in South Albanian probably explain my strong connection to these samples, but I am not sure how to explain yours.? Can you shed some light on that? I think is very interesting?

Two hypotheses turn around my head or they have been proposed to me: we are talking about groups of individuals of mixed origin more or less recent in historical age (mediterranean + continental = i.e. Romans assimilated to the local Pannonian and / or Lombard populations merged with Romans / provincials ), or it must be assumed that in some areas of continental Europe inhabited local populations whose ancestral quotas previously inherited - and before mixing completely with Germanic or Slavic populations - were completely similar to those of the autosomal of a current northern/central Italian.


Needless to deny that this second hypothesis would be extremely interesting to investigate.

I still can't put my hand on the fire, but this persistent and common occurrence in our timelines of Iberian, Italic / Etruscan and Illyrian individuals make me suspect that in protohistoric Europe - at least in the middle continental area - fairly homogeneous populations had originated
