@qh777 If you have more than single raw data (for example 23andMe v3 and v5, as well as MyHeritage) I suggest you to merge all of your data into a single file. That way you will get more precise origin because they changed SNP even within a single company (between v3 and v5 23andMe chips) let alone different companies.

I do have 23&Me v4, v5 (what you saw the results of here), MyHeritage, and Ancestry

My closest ancient population is North Rhine (Merovingian Period), which is not surprising as it is almost identical to modern Belgians.

I find that the mixed mode for modern and ancient populations doesn't work well on IllustrativeDNA. For example, on the two-way modern I get German-Spanish or Welsh-Italian.

Using the 'Customizable Ancient Ancestry' with two populations, my best match in the Iron Age is 56% Germanic and 44% Italic/Etruscan. That's very similar to what I get on Vahaduo using Two Way with the K12b data. That seems to match relatively well the haplogroups of the 7 ancestral Y-DNA lineages that I know (mine and various cousins), which is either Germanic (I1, I2a2-L801) or Italic (R1b-U152).

I am increasingly inclined to think that the Frankish/Merovingian ethnogenesis emerged from a blend of the Romano-Germanic population of the Late Roman Rhineland with the newly arrived Franks descended from Denmark. They would then have mixed with the Romano-Belgic population around modern day Belgium. That would explain why there is apparently much more Roman/Italic/Etruscan Y-DNA in Belgium (especially but not exclusively in Wallonia) and comparatively few Celtic lineages like R1b-L21 or R1b-DF27 (only a tiny minority of all R1b in Belgium and interestingly higher in Flanders than in Wallonia).

It makes sense as there were hardly any cities in Roman time in what is now Belgium. Only a few small cities like Tournai, Tongres and Arlon. All the nearby population centres were along the Rhine (Koblenz, Mainz, Bonn, Cologne, Xanten, Nijmegen), where no less than 11 Roman legions were historically stationed (although not all at the same time). So when the Rhineland and Belgium fused into a common Frankish political entity in Merovingian times, there must have been a transfer of population from the Rhineland towards the new political centres of power in Belgium (Tournai then Liège, then Aachen just at the Belgo-German border). That also explains why the Merovingian samples from the North Rhine are closer to modern Belgians than modern Germans (even from the Rhineland).

I merged them all together on dnagenics last night and uploaded to illustrativedna. I’ll share once it’s available.

The results are complete for my merged 4 raw DNA files (Ancestry, 23&MeV4, 23&MeV5, and MyHeritage).
Here are the ancient mixed mode results. I'm skipping their bronze age section because the fits aren't the best. The only green fit is Corded Ware 57.1% and Globular Amphora Culture 42.9% fit: 2.990 on the 2-way.

Not sure how many screenshots are allowed otherwise I would just do one megapost with top 5-10 2&3way with all periods.

Cool results, are they any better than the separate?

Not sure. It looks like to me the outlier raw dna was from MyHeritage. Ancestry and 23&me V4 and V5 looked most similar. Merged all together I get more assignments of near eastern samples in the Iron age in the top 5-20. In the Iron age for MyHeritage file top 5 are (4 greek and 1 Anatolian).

This result only appears in the 23&Me V5 results at 0.9%

The Scorton Anglian depending on what British Isles calc one uses has between 25%-50% Celtic admix.

I'll mention again that if anyone hasn't seen the previous post the results here are from merging 4 of my raw DNA files into one.

Umayyad Arab, Medieval Arab and Bedouin Narva have something to do with Europeans I believe. They also appear for me too.
