Eupedia Ancient Ethnicities Checker: reliably compare your DNA to ancient populations

I have spent most of the last week calculating the the average values for the K12b admixtures for most of the ancient genomes tested to date. I thank Jovialis for providing me the genomes converted in the right format to run the K12b on Admixture-Studio. You will find the table in the page Genomic analysis of ancient Europeans. I provided an introduction on how to interpret the K12b admixtures.

The purpose of this page is to provide average values for various ancient European populations, which can be used by anyone who has tested their genome to compare their own admixture with these modals on Vahaduo. Averages for a given (historical or modern) population are more useful and representative than individual results due to the potentially high level of interpersonal variations in a society.

This is a good alternative to MyTrueAncestry. In fact, I have found the K12b admixtures to be considerably more reliable than the genetic distance computed by MyTrueAncestry. For example when comparing the Corded Ware genomes with modern population, K12b gives Poles, Russians and Belarussians as the closest matches to the western Corded Ware (Germany) and Finns, Karelians and Estonians for the eastern Corded Ware. In contrast, the closest matches on MyTrueAncestry were the British, Irish and Dutch for the western Corded Ware, which does not make much sense as it was an R1a-dominant culture and the Brits, Irish and Dutch are all R1b-dominant and descended from the Bell Beaker and Unetice.

I also found many inconsistencies in MyTrueAncestry for the results of Medieval Germanic tribes. The closest match to the 6th-century Ostrogoths were the Swedes and English. Yet the 6th-century Ostrogoths were already mixed with Huns and Balkans people. The K12b admixtures give a more probable match to modern Hungarians, Austrians, Slovenes and Croats.

So if you want reliable ancient matches, I would urge you to trust more Dodecad K12b than MyTrueAncestry.
 
Here are the values to copy and paste in Vahaduo to compare with your own genome or modern populations. They are listed in chronological order so that you can easily select the period you are interested in. When comparing someone to multiple ancient populations, it does not make much sense to mix Mesolithic or Neolithic samples with Iron Age or Medieval ones, so it's better to split the data accordingly. You can find the coordinates by period on this page.

I recommend using the 2WAY function as it takes into account blends of populations. I tested it with modern individuals with parents from different countries and is worked perfectly (exactly 50%-50% from each parent's country). It is a bit slow to calculate though.

I'm starting to wonder if the Minions could actually be a good proxy for what pre-Italic southern farmers in Italy may have looked like genetically. Perhaps the Italics brought Steppe to Southern Italy in a similar amount that the Proto-Greeks brought it to the pre-Hellenic people in Greece. Which could be why Southern Italians look genetically similar to Mycenaeans. Of course in addition to waves of Greek colonization.

I’m not getting the Minoans on the default 2way calculator, ... and the secondary population from the top it’s geographically very far from the primary population,
... though my primary population exceeds 90%,
maybe at this high level mark the Minoans start to build up too much or too little of a distance on the 2way calculator.

Well, I must say that made me very happy. I'm related to the people of both the great civilizations of antiquity :) Of course, there's Yamnaya in both the Latins and the ancient Greeks, and there's CHG/Iran Neo in the ancient Greeks.

Basically, one of the scenarios that Lazaridis proposed as the Northern Model for the Mycenaean Greeks in his 2017 paper. Very cool! :)

Not 437 and 850?

At any rate, my closest two way admixture is :

1.9207194063.60% Latins_(n=4) + 36.40% Italian_Greeks_(n=2)

If I'm right about the "Italian Greek" samples, and they are half Latin, then, dividing the 35.40 by 2, I get an additional 18.2% Latin/Ancient Roman, for a total of 81.8%. I'll take that. :)


 
Angela: Sorry, 437 is correct, I just missed label that one, which I tend to always have genetic distances pretty close to.

I have updated the coordinates. I separated Early Neolithic France from Middle Neolithic France, revised BB Gaul and BA Gaul, and added Medieval Catalonia and Medieval Andalusia.

My closest populations in 2Way are:

I suppose that Anglo-Saxon really is Frankish (or broadly West Germanic), as there there are no Frankish samples in the list (unable to convert the genomes of the Merovingian Nobles at the moment).


I see that most Italians are getting a combination of Italo-Celtic (Bell Beaker, Gauls, Latins) and Greeks (Italian_Greeks, Minoans, Mycenaeans), with a higher ratio for the former in the north and the latter in the south. That makes complete sense.
