And it's certainly among the most relevant papers for G-L497.

From the 17 G2a samples in this paper, 15 were confirmed for G-L497, one has unknown status for G-L497 and only one was not G-L497. Had never seen so many G-L497s in a single paper. There are almost as many as all the other current ancient G-L497s put together. Nice! :)

The samples (plus the supposed two modern reference individuals that are closer - or less distant - from each of them in autosomal).
- I10347; G-FGC477->G-BY27899; 2500-1700 BCE; tomb from Villard, Lauzet-Ubaye, France; Bell Beaker(?); CAR048 (Central Catalan) and T_29 (Occitan).

In terms of percentages:

  • R1b = 64.3% (including 17.9% of L2)
  • G2a-L497 = 10.7%
  • R1a = 8.9%
  • I2a2 = 7.1%
  • E-V13 = 5.3%
  • I2a1 = 1.8%
  • J2b2 = 1.8%
  • N1c1 = 1.8%

I had correctly predicted for over 10 years that La Tène Celts would be overwhelmingly R1b-P312 with mostly U152>L2 and U152>Z36 and with substantial minorities of G2a-L497, I2a2 (notably L38), E-V13 and J2b2. I did not expect N1c1 to show up, not as much R1a. However these are Central-East European samples, not La Tène from Gaul, which surely will have much less R1a.

Here are the Y-DNA haplogroups of the samples from the La Tène culture (n=56).

We know what is that P310/312? Is it P310/312 in general or is an undetermined branch of it?

Hallstatt culture

All samples are from Czechia except one from Hungary.

  • G2a-L140>CTS342
  • G2a-L140>L497>Z1815>Z1823>Z726>CTS4803
  • I2a1b-L161.1
  • I2a2a-M223>L1229>S18331
  • R1b-M269
  • R1b-Z2103>Z2110
  • R1b-L52>L151>PF6538>DF19>Y6234

Only 7 samples, so it's far from representative, but we note the absence of E-V13 and J2a2 on the one hand, and N1c1 and R1a on the other. More samples are needed to confirm whether they were brought from the east with the shift to the La Tène culture or if they were already there during the Hallstatt period. R1a was surely already present since the Corded Ware period.

Unetice culture

All samples from Czechia.

  • I2a2b-L38
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635
  • I2c-L596>I-Y14158>S6635>PF3885
  • R1a-Z280
  • R1b-U152>L2
  • R1b-U152>L2
  • R1b-U152>L2
  • R1b-U152>L2
  • R1b-U152>L2>L20
  • R1b-DF27>Z195>Y153322

Unetice predates the Tumulus and Hallstatt cultures. R1b-L2 was already a major lineage back then. The high frequency of I2c is interesting, but surely the result of a sample bias (extended family tested).

Once again no E-V13 nor J2b2, but that is normal as their expansion is supposed to have happened during the Middle to Late Bronze Age.

We know what is that P310/312? Is it P310/312 in general or is an undetermined branch of it?

If I write P310, it means that it is the last known SNP tested. Ditto for P312.

I'm not surprised that some Y-G2a-L497 and some Y-E1b-V13 appeared among late Celts or dominantly late Celtic cultures; I suppose they were part of the foreign and active pop's elements having helped to spread Urnfield culture from East-Central Europe towards West. What about the very low level of Y-J2? I 'm surprised too by Y-R1a and Y-N.
In West the more genuine Celtic elements were surely even more in a Y-R1b "monopole". The U152 's seem linked more to P-Celtic and La Tène.

Iron Age France (Gauls)

All samples date from 250-200 BCE, which is to say the La Tène period. They are from Northeast and Southeast France.

  • R1b-L52>L151>P312>DF27>L617

Probably not enough samples, but I do expect E-V13 and J2b2 to show up in Iron Age Gaul. Nevertheless the two top haplogroups (R1b-P312 and G2a) are the same as in Central European La Tène.

............

Don't think it was mentioned. This study also found an Iron Age La Tene sample dated to 250BCE in Bohemia, Czechia that was R1a-L1029. It was predicted R-YP5267 however this is a no call based on yfull, including a number of other downstream branches. Yfull has currently left it as R-L1029. This is pretty big considering the claims that R-L1029 only came with Slavs. Now we have a R-M458 in late Hallstatt from the previous Switzerland Neolithic study and this R-L1029 from La Tene in Czechia. Assuming it is truly downstream, then R-L1029 is at least 2250ybp if not greater.

The only interesting thing is the sample is very Scando-Germanic and not too western. Then again some other La Tene samples had a very Balto-Slavic drift according to Tomenable on Anthrogenica. Below is the R-L1029 La Tene autosomal.

Haplogroup frequency

  • R1b = 88.3% (including 58.2% of L21, 6.8% of M269, 5.5% of DF27 and 4.1% of L2)
  • G2a-L497 = 3.4%
  • I2a2a-M223 = 3.4%
  • F = 2.7%
  • I2a1a-M26 = 1.4%
  • I1 = 0.7%

The Middle Iron Age sees the arrival of R1b-U152>L2 and G2a-L497 who brought the La Tène culture from Central Europe via northern Gaul. However no E-V13 or J2b2 were found either in La Tène Gaul or in La Tène Britain. This is rather odd considering that the same La Tène people from Central Europe were already a blend of R-L2 and G-L497 with E-V13 and J2b2. Consequently that would mean that E-V13 and J2b2 only made their way to Western Europe during the Roman period and/or during the Middle Ages. The case of Italy is even stranger as J2b2 is present in the Iron Age among Etruscans and Italics, but E-V13 is still absent.

Hallstatt culture

All samples are from Czechia except one from Hungary.

I12099 (650-500 BCE), as I16327 (800-550 BCE) and I18227 (620-530 BCE), would have been related to Hallstatt too, no?
"Chotín IA, Komárno, Slovakia
In 1952–4, 1961 and 1962, the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra headed by M. Dušek carried out extensive rescue excavations in Chotín, located in Horná ľanová zem (Komárno District, Nitra Region), at one of the largest cemeteries not only of the Vekerzug culture but also of the Hallstatt period in the Central Danube Region."

If so, three "Hallstatt" G2a in this paper. They would add up to the 2800-2600 years old HÜ-I/8 (mentioned in my previous post).

About the list from Middle & Late Iron Age Britain, perhaps just a coincidence, but if we consider only "confirmed" non-R-L21 samples, the % of G-L497 becomes similar to the one in La Tène list (~12% vs. ~11%). By the way, if I checked it correctly, there would be four G-L497 from UK in this paper, not five.

As to your bolded comment, we'll see.
As to Italy in terms of Hungarian Bronze Age:
DRF2CWo.png

It makes me wonder, considering my hypothesis for the "Northern" model (similar to the one Lazaridis proposed for Mycenaeans; i.e steppe + Minoan) for South Italy.

I would love to see a heat map of Europe with ancestry similar to Minoans.
BR2 is consistent with one half of the hypothesis; and it peaks relatively high in Basilicata and Bari.

Here's a map I found on a google image search, I'm sure most of you are familiar with it.

At any rate, you combine the Minoan ancestry, and BR2 heatmap, and there you have the "Northern Model" for Southern Italy. (Steppe + Minoan).

Yep. Makes one think how much in line amateur tools are with professionally derived models.

That particular map is from Ph2ter. And it is fully in line with the Lazaridis paper.

I got a heatmap done for me as well.

The "red" in Provence is very interesting, given the presence of Massalia, the Greek colony there. Of course, "Italians" settled in Provence since the days of the Romans, when it was considered "Our" Province.

You can still see the division of Italy into either north or south of the La Spezia/Rimini or Massa/Senigallia line.

An individual from this study is R1b-L617, finally my Y in aDNA record.

Sample I19857, dated to 1473 BCE, location - Rowbarrow near Salisbury

Edit:

Wow, there are 4 more R1b-L617s - a group of four close male relatives:

I19630
I19358
I19362
I19363

^^^
Dated to 300-200 BCE - France Grand Est IA2 - Marne, Chemin de Coupetz, Faux-Vesigneul France.

This is undoubtedly Gallic, so my haplogroup is now linked with the Celts.
