Slavic homeland and ethnogenesis

@ Milan M.

The Paeonians according some were sons of Agrios
but archaiologists and later historians place them with Thracians,
there are many Thracians,
Makedonians were very connected with Brygians or Phrygians Thracians,
in fact Mygdones (Brygians who stayed at balkans) might me the same as Makedonians (Makedonians Mugdonians)
Alexander gave respect and waited for help from Phrygians at Gordion,

Paeonians belong to another group of Thracian,
we can be sure if they are connected with Pierioi Thracians of Orpheus,
but with Syntikes Odomantikes etc surely connected to a larger thracian Group,
Paeonians were enemies of Makedonians, but with time and after Εταιροι they were united to a more common state

the case of Scythian wife of Phillipos B' is known well know,
maybe that is why Alexander choose a horse tribe woman as his wife Roxanna,
something tells me that Alexander admire his step mother, a horse riding warrior woman,
and reject his mother's style a queenn and religious high priest, style of woman,
that is why he rejected many women, including darius daughter,

now the case of 'sati' is also mentioned at warrangs, Varrangians, the Vikings of Volga,
seems like even after 1100 AD women died with their master or husband

@ arvisto

a kind of Sati existed even in Vikings,
the Volga Vikings until 1100 1200 AD had that custom,
even in Poland if I remeber we see it in Vikings tombs

Maurice campaign were from 582-602when this custom was written about Sclavenes which Theophylact tell us they are Getae we can't just close our eyes in front of that and Herodotus wrote this about Thracians much earlier,in 1100 AD such customs were not in use among Balkan Slavs cause were Christianized much earlier.

I'm a bit out of topic here, Yetos, but some examples cannot prove anything; the seldom thracian words we have are by definition of an old stage of I-Ean dialect and it is easy to find words (cognates) shared by different today families of I-Ean languages, when searching old stages or proto-stages. I can show you celtic words cognate with slavic words, what cannot prove a recent common origin nor even recent contacts. This applies too to some of the "slavic" placenames of Pannonia cited by Milan, I think. Indo-Iranian languages share too some words with occidental I-Ean modern languages, germanic by instance. Nobody would say old Indo-iranian was not already a well enough separated language from western I-Ean ones.
By the way, I don't see any evident link between the 'mac' ('mab') / 'muka' words and the slavic words formed upon 'musc-'

concenring 'med' ("drink"): welsh 'medd' : "hydromel" - welsh 'meddw', breton 'mezw' : "drunk" -
that said, I agree a common satem origin and archaïc forms can explain the most of the thracian and balto-slavic convergences, without making all the same of them.

hmm
I can use many examples of trully Thracian to combine them with IE languages,
we can discuss a lot about Thracian,
I can even claim that Thracian was centum, using their known vocabulary,
like kalimindar καλαμος, σωλην, αυλος ΣΥΡΙΓΞ,
but believe me I can not accept Thracian, as coming from another modern language,
I think it is older, much much older, even older than Hommeric, reaching maybe before Mycenean,
now if Indo-iranian, or Armeno-Thracian, or Celto-Thracian, i think it was older than all,
I think from proto-Thracian sprunk many modern IE languages and groups, than Thracian from another group,
Allow me to have that feeling, since nobody as I know yet can prove something oposite,
and I consider it impossimble Thracian to was a 'sink' language like modern Greek (basically ancient Greek, with latin aromani and Thracian, but also slavic, turkish, german)

I mean in what we call Northern IE language Germanic Slavic Baltic Albanian can Thracian exist?
and in what we call southern or old, indo-Hettit or Indo-iranian, Armenian, Homeric can Thracian exist?
or western Celtic can Thracian exist?
my answer is that Thracian was either 'mother' of Balto-Slavic (celtic?) or sister of Baltic and Germanic,
but it can also be mother or sister of Armenian or Celtic, which Balto-Germanic can not be as I know yet,

so considering Thracian as 'daughter' of Balto-Germanic-Slavic, I think we make a mistake,
or perhaps I still misunderstand the 'connection'

Indeed the Greeks perhaps also have theory that Thracians are Greeks and even Centum language?Well known "propaganda" just like Alexander spoke Hellenic language,if ancient Macedonian can not be classified as Greek language, why is he claimed by the Greeks, because they lived on same territory? so the Slavic Macedonians does and were living more so until they were expelled and assimilated from todays Greek Macedonia,i have questions here,if Slavic Macedonians in genetics are pretty close with Greek Macedonians and the Greek Macedonians opposite then with the rest of Greece, why the one should learn history that their ancestors came in the 6th century with straw in their mouth and the others don't if the person they are "battling" for spoked neither Slavic nor Greek according to linguist since the language is not classify yet despite Greek effort to connect it with their language, same apply for the Romanians if they claim continuity and they are almost same with Bulgarians and Serbs in genetics why the others should learn the same history that their ancestors came from somewhere and to others did not,a history with which South Slavs suffered greatly,a history which allowed others to claim supremacy over others lands, empires, colonists, history which was never proven and look funny when you do more research, the answer is very easy, the history was written the way suit other people gains,i guess we all should do the same and i don't blame Macedonians for claiming Alexander they are right as much the Greek Macedonians are,Thracian is Balto-Slavic in many cases much similar with Slavic despite it was known from very early stage, when yet perhaps Balto-Slavic unity existed, which was first IE in the Balkans prior the colonist Greeks, the sentence you wrote the same way i can connect the Minoans with us and many others, not only the Greeks have pseudo historians.

No Thracian is above or equal Balto-Slavic,

when Thracian has vocabulary that exist in old and western language, can not be a 'daughter' language of a north language,
it can be mother, or sister, at least I can get it,

the rest about Macedonia and SlavoMakedonia I will overpass,
I will write about ancient Makedonian language, in the thread about Greek languages and dialects,

in fact Greeks never said that Thracians were of Greek origin,
but if you take a good look at Duridanov's work, there is enough that can put Thracian even to this,
the most possible is that primitive North West Greek sprunk from a proto Thracian, or from a proto Greco-Aryan
according IE theory of kurgans, Thracian was first stop to cotofeni, and Greek second at Vatin Serbia, Vucocar third
the rest is upon your mind,
I said Makedonians were very united with some Thracian tribes, like Bryges,
BUT IF MAKEDONIANS SPOKE THRACIAN OR ILLYRIAN ALL ANCIENT WOULD PLACE THEM AS THRACIAN OR ILLYRIANS,
But although they all recogn that they spoke a 'funny dialect-language' I will explain that
none testify that they spoke Thracian or Illyrian or Persian or Celtic,
koine language of new testament has >20% Makedonian words

now you can keep your shelf calm, Slavs are not in danger by Greeks, rather the oposite

and when Alexander started his campaign, said
Πλειστοι Ελληνων πλην Λακεδαιμονιων,
and when the inner strangle started at Indus river, nobody recogn Makedonian as Thracian or Illyrian or any other language,
search the ancient Makedonian language, will do you good,

TO UNDERSTAND ANCIENT MAKEDONIAN, YOU MUST KNOW IE before THAN ANCIENT GREEK,

besides Makedonia is exonym given to us by Atheneans, can you give us our inner name?

Similarities between Herodotus to Abraham ben Jacob of different people in different times? Vinko Pribojevic,Mario Alinei and some other supporters of such ethnogensis.

Herodotus about the Thracians:

The Thracians are the most powerful people in the world, second most numerous after the Indians; and if they had one head, or were agreed among themselves, it is my belief that their match could not be found anywhere,
and that they would very far surpass all other nations. But such union
is impossible for them, and there are no means of ever bringing it
about. Herein therefore consists their weakness. The Thracians bear
many names in the different regions of their country, but all of them
have like usages in every respect, excepting only the Getae, the Trausi,
and those who dwell above the people of Creston.

Abraham ben Jacob (a 10th century Sephardic Jewish traveller from Muslim Spain):

Slavic countries extend from the Mediterranean Sea to the Northern Ocean.Generally speaking, Slavs are warlike and violent, and if not their internal discord and lack of unity, no other nation would be able to match them in strength. (...)"

In Herodotus eyes and time perhaps this was how Thracian lands looked like.

Ever since Vinko Pribojevic the founder of the Pan Slavic movement established Thyras and the Thracians as father of the Slavs in the 16th century,Currently Mario Alinei the author of Paleolithic continuity support such ethnogenesis of the Slavs, which i am myself supporter of such ethnogenesis which make much more sense to me.

This map is the same as used by the very ancient greek historians, some say its true and some say its false.

I have question for you why the Greeks were mostly on Roman side during the Macedonian wars?I don't claim none of this don't take me wrong but rather interested, how Macedonian empire fell apart so fast, because it was mixed heritage empire i guess not al were obedient to central power in Macedonia after Alexander dead?

Macedonian Wars

Macedonian Wars, (3rd and 2nd centuries bc), four conflicts between the ancient Roman Republic and the kingdom of Macedonia. They caused increasing involvement by Rome in Greek affairs and helped lead to Roman domination of the entire eastern Mediterranean area.

The First Macedonian War (215–205 bc) occurred in the context of the Second Punic War, while Rome was preoccupied with fighting Carthage. The ambitious Macedonian king Philip V set out to attack Rome’s client states in neighbouring Illyria and confirmed his purpose in 215 by making an alliance with Hannibal of Carthage against Rome. The Romans fought the ensuing war ineffectively, and in 205 the Peace of Phoenice ended the conflict on terms favourable to Philip, allowing him to keep his conquests in Illyria.

Philip then began attacking Rhodes, Pergamum, and other Greek city-states of the Aegean. The Second Macedonian War (200–196) was launched by the Roman Senate against Philip after he refused to guarantee to make no hostile moves against these states. Philip’s forces were badly defeated by the Romans and their Greek allies in a battle at Cynoscephalae in 197. The terms of peace included the loss of most of his navy, payment of a large indemnity to Rome, and the loss of his territories outside of Macedonia. Rome subsequently established a benevolent protectorate over Greece.

Philip’s son and successor, Perseus (reigned 179–168), began to make alliances with various Greek city-states and thus aroused the displeasure of Rome. So began the Third Macedonian War (171–168), which ended in 168 when the Roman army of Lucius Aemilius Paullus utterly defeated Perseus’ forces at the Battle of Pydna. Perseus was taken back to Rome in chains, and Macedonia was broken up into four formally autonomous republics that were required to pay annual tribute to Rome. This arrangement produced a state of chronic disorder in Macedonia, however, and in 152 a pretended son of Perseus, Andriscus, tried to reestablish the Macedonian monarchy, thus provoking the Fourth Macedonian War (149–148). The Roman praetor Quintus Caecilius Metellus crushed the rebellion with relative ease, and in 146 Macedonia was made a Roman province. It was in fact the first province of the nascent Roman Empire.

Old Church Slavonic schools.

Saint Panteleimon (Macedonian: Свети Пантелеjмон, Sveti Pantelejmon, pronounced [pantɛlɛjˈmɔn]; Greek: Άγιος Παντελεήμων) is a monastery in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia situated on Plaošnik. It is attributed to Clement of Ohrid, a disciple of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. Archaeologists have come to believe that the monastery was the site where the first students of the Glagolitic alphabet (used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic) were taught.
The monastery is believed to have been built when Saint Clement arrived in Ohrid
Clement participated in the mission of Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia. After the death of Cyril, Clement accompanied Methodius on his journey from Rome to Pannonia and Great Moravia. After the death of Methodius himself in 885, Clement headed the struggle against the German clergy in Great Moravia along with Gorazd. After spending some time in jail, he was expelled from Great Moravia and in 885 or 886 reached the borders of Bulgaria together with Naum of Preslav.
Many archaeologists believe that Clement himself designed and constructed the monastery. Clement, along with Naum of Preslav would use the monastery as a basis for teaching the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets to Christianised Slavs thus making it a university.

The monastery stands on a hill which is now known as Plaošnik overlooking Lake Ohrid. Clement built his monastery on a restored church and a Roman basilica of five parts (the remains of the basilicas can still be seen outside the monastery). Judging by the architectural style and design of the monastery, researchers say that Saint Clement intended for his building to be a literary school for disciples, thus it is believed to be the first and oldest discontinued university in Europe.

are you from Fyrom, Serbia, or Bulgaria?

I my shelf wrote many times about the 5 Slavic tribes that entered Greece,
I my shelf said that there is an 8 to 14% Slavic admixture in modern greeks, (everybody giveswhatever, they give from 3 to 30% according their will each),
I my shelf admit that in some parts of Makedonia Slavic element was high enough,
DO YOU ADMIT THAT IN MONASTER STROMNITSA GREEK ELEMENT WAS HIGH?
do you admit that in Novisad Greeks were 40% of the city?
do you know that 4-13% of modern Serbia are Greeks and Aromani from Makedonia
search the Georgakis Olympios case, you will find more there,
I have met and spoke with the greater Hydrologist of Balkans before more than a decade,
do you know his story?

anyway the entrance of Slavs in Greek Makedonia has nothing to do with ancient Makedonia
do not make that mistake,
if you want search in the Forum posts and opinions,,
this is discussed more than 700 post

about Βασιλειος, Ι let you find his origin and family,
and THE NAME GIVEN TO HIM,

and THE NAME GIVEN TO HIM,
Many cities were settled by Greek speakers speacialy in sea coast,i don't deny that,I can't give you percentage since all balkan is similar in genetics, difference is language, well we look different on certain historical developments, you say Slav enter well i fail to notice in any Greek authors, not in miracle saint dimetrius, that Sclavenes entered Greece or Macedonia,Balkans from somewhere else, for every Sclavenes written for within the empire, authors give as status quo,or the one that were raiding was going back to Danube their power base, the migration went unnoticed, actually in a chapter he call the Sclavenes neighbours, which where living in the hinterland of Thesaloniki, those same tribes besegied the city,i see the Sclavenes as rebels against Roman empire interpreted as something different in that 19th century inception, since they were always Roman enemies and Sclaviniae meant something like Enclaves and the derived word is not ethnic adjective, how language development took place can't claim with certainty, since we have long time span, let's say from Thracian attested to Old Church Slavonic and turbulent period, some languages after so many years lost most of their words and change completely, which didn't happened so much here.

Ancient tribes;
The Bessi (/ˈbɛsaɪ/; Ancient Greek: Βῆσσοι or Βέσσοι) were an independent Thracian tribe who lived in a territory ranging from Moesia to Mount Rhodope in southern Thrace.
They are described as the fiercest among the tribes in Thrace.Strabo, provides a record in which the Bessi are described as the fiercest of the independent Thracian tribes, dwelling on and around the Haemus range, and possessing the greater part of the area around that mountain chain. He calls them brigands among brigands and that they were addicted to plunder.Herodotus described them as a sort of priestly-caste among the Satrae.
Etymology of Besoi from Bes-rage,fury, rave, fulminate, tempest.

Doberes (Ancient Greek: Δόβηρες) were an ancient Paeonian tribe.
Etymology could be from Dobar meaning good, similar names are found among many Slavic toponyms for example today Debar in Macedonia,The first recorded document mentioning Debar is the map of Ptolemy, dating around the middle of the 2nd century, in which it is called Deborus.Dobrin,Dobrzyn,Dobre,Dobrosane among many other similar names of Slavic toponyms.

The Agrianians (Ancient Greek: Ἀγρίανες,Agrianes) were a Paeonian-Thracian tribe whose country was centered at Upper Strymon, in present-day westernmost Bulgaria, and also held areas of southeasternmost Serbia,at the time situated south of the Triballi and north of the Maedi. In the times of Philip II, the territory of the Agrianes was administered by Pella. They were crack javelin throwers and an elite unit of Alexander the Great's light infantry, who fought under the command of General Attalus.

They fought light; they carried a bundle of javelins into battle and wore no armor or helmets, perhaps not even shields. Alexander made heavy use of them and every time he dispatched a flying column, the Agrianians were always included. They were expert fighters in mountainous terrain where the phalanx was impracticable and mobile enough to use when speed was essential. Being an elite unit of the light infantry, they often formed up with the hypaspists battalion and the companion cavalry on the right wing of the army.

They are first mentioned regarding the Megabazos' campaign in 511 BC.In 429 BC they were subject to the Odrysian kingdom and later, as early as 352 BC, they became allies of Philip of Macedonia.
At the Battle of Gaugamela, they numbered 1,000 men. They fought under king Langarus with the Macedonians against the Triballians in 335 BC and succeeded in protecting the lands of Alexander and were thus rewarded with the right to govern themselves, a move that led to a long-lasting and most reliable alliance. During the time of the Seleucid Empire, a crack unit of Antiochus' Agrianes was brigaded together with Persians at Raphia. Contingents from the Agrianes and the Penestae, numbering 800 and 2,000 men respectively, were a part of the garrison of Cassandreia at the time of the Third Macedonian War.

Wikipedia give me the ethnonym from Indo-European origin (from *agro- "field" (cf. Lat. ager, Gk. ἀγρός agros, Eng. acre) but since that region is one of the most mountainous, cause my ancestors are from that region,I incourage myself to say that etymology is from Gora-mountain, Goriani-mountaneirs,highlanders.Hellenized name is Agriani since we know that Hellenized names for example of Radogast is Ardagast, fort Ras is Arsa etc.Gorani as people yet exist if they have any connection..

Old tales about emperor Diocletian.

Dukljan or Dukljanin (Serbian pronunciation: [dûkʎanin]) is a figure in Serbian mythology that is a reflection of the Roman emperor Diocletian. He is presented as the adversary of God, possibly because of the real Diocletian's persecution of Christians.

Legends attribute to him building of the town of Duklja,Dukljan's border,(Dioclea) and the Roman milestones near Tuzi (according to a folktale, he was throwing them at his brother and sister as they were fleeing to Hum).

A Serbian folk song about Dukljan says that he once removed the Sun from the sky and brought it to the Earth.Saint John managed to trick him and restore the Sun, but afterwards, while chasing him, Dukljan grabbed at him and tore a piece of flesh from John's foot, which explains why humans have arches of the foot.

Several variants of a story that he is still alive exist; according to them he is chained in the Morača river near Duklja. In some of them, he constantly gnaws at his chains, and each year around Christmas (or around Đurđevdan) nearly manages to break free and destroy the world, when four Gypsy blacksmiths reforge the chains.

Whatever Duklja,Dukla meant to Old Slavs if it was, maybe someone can help? but is find in toponyms among many Slavic countries for which i had posts prior,Docleatae or Dokleatai was ancient Illyrian tribe later the same name was used for the Montenegrins and they were using it for themselves Dukljans.
According to Middle Ages and Renaissance Dalmatians his birth place,Diocletian was Dalmatian thus Illyrian that meant for them a Slav,Slovinac.
