Call me dumb, but how can they know how much Slavic ancestry is in Greeks without at least any classical era samples? In addition to that, having samples from the entirety of Greece, not just one or two locations, to assess any potential regional variation in their profiles.

I agree entirely - you can't make this kind of a claim until you have a very thorough sampling of what Greece looked like prior to the Slavic migrations into the Balkans. David Reich and his coauthors seem dead set in trying to rewrite history, as usual. If anything the late bronze age Greeks from Skourtanioti et al. 2023 imply the inverse; that modern Greek profiles were totally or near totally formed by the Trojan war. Based off of this I don't anticipate much if any Slavic admixture in modern Greeks.

So the new study pretty much confirms what we already knew

1) Significant ancient Western Anatolian/Greco-Anatolian input during Late Antiquity which exists to an extent till nowadays. This was the profile of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine western Anatolia and it exists almost identical in modern Dodecanese region, and to a large extent in the rest of Aegean Islanders and Maniots. Mainland Greece is a combo of this profile + modern Balkans to different ratios depending the region while Cyprus is ancient Western Anatolian + Levantine. Interestingly this study indicates that a bit of this kind of ancestry exists in the rest of the Balkans as well.

2) The Slavic input is significant even in non-Slavic south Balkan countries (Albania and Greece). I don't know if the percentages are 100% accurate (for example I would expect 25% instead of 30% Slavic input in Peloponnese) but 5% more or less does not make a change on the big picture. The demographic impact of the Slavs was big in the whole region of the Balkans.

3) E-V13 seems for one more time a haplogroup of the ancient central and eastern Balkans whose frequency became lower in many parts of Balkans after the Slavic invasions. It survived in very high frequencies in Albania (high Daco-Thracian related ancestry) and partly in mainland Greece (Hellenized south Thracians during late Hellenistic and Roman era, medieval Vlach and later Arvanite migrations)

Because it's pretty apparent and obvious that Greeks show a lot of continuity with their ancient predecessors. The idea that they have 30-40% Slavic admixture is simply absurd - especially when we already have recovered multiple bronze aged high steppe individuals from Greece who cluster with central and even northern Italians. The idea that this type of ancestry came via Slavic migrations instead of already natively existing in the Balkans since the bronze age is looking more outdated by the day.

Indeed, Danubian Tumulus culture and Urnfield groups were packed with R-L2, and the La Tene Celts brought even more of it. We know they lived along the Danube, side by side with Illyrians and Daco-Thracians before the Romans came.

As for E-V13 and Balkan Iron Age profile, its clear we're dealing with different groups (South Thracians, North Thracians-Dacians, Illyrians etc.) which were however, autosomally, all not THAT FAR from each other, especially in comparison to the incoming Anatolians, Germanics, Iranians, Huns-Avars and Slavs. Therefore relatively speaking, they are almost a unified block, and the main difference will turn out to be patrilineages anyway (Illyrian J-L283 vs. Thracian E-V13).

It's the same in the West, with the difference between Germanics and North Celtic tribes. Those are much harder to distinguish, especially in transitional zones, than they are to differentiate from outsiders. And this "local" (to the macro-region) vs. "foreigners" (to the macro-region) is what this Balkan Iron Age profile or genetic range is about. Its not more than that.

Obviously if digging deeper, especially with uniparentals, but also autosomal admixture and IBD analyses, more could be told about the differentiations within the Carpatho-Balkan sphere. Because this "Balkan IA" genetic legacy won't be restricted to the Balkans, but extend far along the Danube and up to the North and East Carpathian sphere, basically where the Daco-Thracian/Thracian Hallstatt populations had their homes and colonies. As well as to Italia, where Illyrians landed etc.

That may be so, but I tire of seeing the internet obsession with trying to prove discontinuity of the Greeks. The data really does not suggest this at all so far and despite lacking iron age/classical era Greeks and almost any samples from Northern Greece we have people like yourself already proclaiming Greeks to be 40% Slavic which is absurd. The study in this thread has but one sample from the southern Greek mainland from ~250AD and this individual clusters with the western Anatolians of the Roman era. As to how anyone can derive 30-40% Slavic admixture in modern Greeks from that alone is beyond me. Quite simply put this is not an argument in good faith from my perspective.

It has been an argument of mine that especially R1b-L2 might have been pervasive in the interior of Western Balkans, accompanied by R1b-U152, G2a and various clades of I2a. It is pure speculation, of course, but I wouldn't discard it as implausible reasoning. The interior of the Western Balkans is poorly investigated. We know very little about the Illyrians and which of the so far studied samples can be attributed to them. J-L283 seems to dominate among the few samples that have been examined but they strike me as a coastal phenomenon and they appear to be very similar to the samples identified with the Liburnians who were not Illyrians.

I wonder how Thracian E-V13 actually is. It's a pre-Thracian haplogroup that became so widespread due to a founder effect. The Thracian language bears some interesting similarities to Baltic. You say that the Thracians had their colonies in the North and East carpathian sphere but it's more likely that the proto-Thracians came from there. They might have brought some E-V13 with them but the bulk of it was absorbed in the southeastern Balkans. Similarly, the Illyrians (whoever they were) absorbed J-L283 but there is a lot of work to be done until we can speculate about the proto-Illyrians with some confidence.

I associate both E-V13 and Daco-Thracians with Gáve-Holigrady and Belegis II-Gáva (South Eastern Urnfield groups) and their secondary expansions with Channelled Ware. In the South they formed Stamped Pottery - in the centre, from Stamped Pottery influences, Basarabi was formed. The E-V13 homeland is the Upper Tisza and Transtisza zone in my opinion, probably since Cotofeni.
Proto-Thracian likely spread with E-V13/Channelled Ware.

There was no Thracian earlier than that, but just more generalised dialects, from which Thracian split. In all likelihood, either Cotofeni was the source, or later Füzesabony-Otomani. The latter was dominated by R-Z282, the former is unknown as of yet, but samples should arrive next year.
The third option is Noua-Sabatinovka, which was R-Z93, but I really go with Cotofeni as an EBA source from which both Thracians evolved and in which successor groups in the Transtisza zone E-V13 began to dominate. Groups like Nyirseg and Eastern Otomani-Gyulavarsand into Suciu de Sus, Lapus and finally Gáva.

The Middle Danubian group of the Urnfielders was likely R-L2 dominated, because it descended directly from the Middle Danubian Tumulus culture and had minor admixture from I2 (Lusatians) and E-V13 (Gáva). But its hard to test and prove, since they obviously cremated.

Vatya was i2 where the proto Urnfield core formed, we then see Tollense battle full of i2 and an r1a, Lusatians who also cremated mostly i2 and then the Lichtenstein cave Urnfield elites. Regions north west to this core on the map would have been mostly R-L2

TBF there is only one way to find out. Replicate the whole study using their own methods, and see how this sample selection holds up when compared to equivalent samples.
That was enough to prove their draft paper some years ago was of low value, but they have improved it since, Albanians went from 45% Slavic in their first draft to whatever it is now, 30%?
I will get to it in the following months in my free time, but last time I replicated the whole draft, it was obvious that the sample selection was crap, as they were using Spain Hellenic samples to model Albanians, and when better proxies such as the IA Albanian samples or even BA Albanian samples came out, the Slavic component dropped to 12% max. Looking forward to test with the Kuline samples as Slavic proxy, since it might be a better option than what we had the first time around where I had to pick either Avar2 Slavic sample, Czech early Slav sample, or the Byzantine Slavic profile from Anatolia.

Authors wrote about Eastern European ancestry which is obviously yamnaya+later immigrations.
